CONTROLLER

The Defender Association, a non-profit and local government contractor seeks an experienced accountant for the position of Controller.  The Defender Association has 140 employees and over $10 million in revenue.  The Defender Association represents indigent clients in misdemeanor, juvenile, felony, dependency, civil commitment, and sexual offender commitment matters as well as appeals at all levels of state courts.  We are able to recruit excellent professional staff nationally because of our reputation for outstanding representation of low-income clients.  In addition to legal representation, the Defender Association employs social workers to assist clients with housing, public benefits and other pressing needs, and plays a role in improving justice system policies.

 

The position of Controller requires an ambitious individual with a solid knowledge base of the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of accounting.  Our ideal candidate will possess significant experience with financial reporting, ability to complete monthly key reports, be an effective troubleshooter, and take the initiative to recommend system improvements.

 

The role of Controller consists of performing a variety of accounting duties, including, but not limited to:

1.  Prepare monthly financial statements

2.  Implement, and recommend enhancements in, company policy and procedure

3.  Follow the monthly reporting schedule working with the Director and/or CFO to complete accurate and timely financial reports

4.  Prepare a budget and present financial results (budget vs. actual) to the Director and the Board of Directors

5.  Maintain revenues and expenses for cost centers in a firm with diverse funding sources

6.  Supervise an accounting staff

7.  Maintain human resource records & provide new employee orientation to certain benefits

 

Qualifications:

1.  B.S. in Accounting or equivalent

2.  3+ years of professional experience

3.  Familiar with GAAP and other accounting procedures and ability to learn upcoming changes in accounting pronouncements

4.  Must be PC and Microsoft Word/Excel proficient

5.  Excellent communication skills - written and verbal

6.  Strong desire to gain experience and progress in their career

7.  Familiarity with, or clear ability to learn quickly, the use of MIP software.
