The Ryerson Tax Department is looking for a bright, energetic person to fill a tax internship position during the summer of 2008. The responsibilities of the Tax Intern will include compliance associated with both sales tax returns and income tax returns. Individual will report to a Tax Manager. Expected responsibilities include:' Assist Tax Manager on special projects to recover sales tax.' Solicit new exemption/resale certificates for customers who have expiring and/or invalid certificates.' Organize data to be used for refund requests.' Gather data from other departments, including accounting and operations, to be used for tax audits.' Preparation of specific state and city income tax returns.' Analyze fixed asset disposal detail from accounting records and load required adjustments into tax books.At the end of the internship, it is expected that the tax intern will have learned the following:' A general understanding of how the sales tax system works, including what activities create nexus and the compliance required by corporations that have nexus in each jurisdiction.' A specific understanding of tax depreciation rules.' A general understanding of how state and local income tax is calculated.' How the tax department positively impacts the company's financial results.' How the use of technology can streamline tax processes. This candidate should have strong analytical, organization, and technological skills. No prior tax experience is required, but introductory accounting classes are required.
