The federal tax reporting group prepares tax filings, estimated tax projections, manages the income tax financial reporting, and evaluates the tax effect and implications of business strategies and proposals to maximize tax savings opportunities and contribute to shareholder value while fulfilling tax payment and reporting obligations.QualificationsTax Return Compliance Manage the accurate reporting of federal income tax returns by identifying, researching and evaluating alternative tax positions in order to determine and implement a supportable, cost effective filing position. Perform the review and consolidation of Sears federal income tax return. Manage the timely and efficient administration of information assimilation and reporting through review of processes and implementation of procedures that enhance speed and efficiency of administration. Financial Reporting Manage the accurate preparation of federal income tax expense (both current and deferred) for financial statement purposes. Assist in evaluating tax reporting positions in order to propose appropriate levels of tax cushion to be maintained in the event of adverse tax determinations. Planning Activities Partner with business units to proactively identify and research tax planning opportunities. Implement structural and non-structural tax planning strategies, which maximize savings on a defensible basis. Participate in the review of proposed transactions to properly advise management of tax consequences. Tax Audits and Controversies Assist in responding to requests for information from federal government officials to successfully defend tax filing positions. Interact with current and former business groups (Dean Witter, Citigroup, etc.) to coordinate and implement audit strategies. Must be abreast of legal developments and industry positions in order to accurately evaluate options and responses to requests for information. Legislative Activities Monitor industry positions relevant to Sears business operations. Build and maintain an internal tax organization to support above activities, including providing for professional training and career growth.
