Portfolio Controller

Our client is a highly successful, Chicago-based private equity real estate investment firm, focused primarily on the ownership and operation of manufactured housing communities, retail and mixed-use properties, and parking assets.  Company combines focused investment strategies with a disciplined approach to transaction execution and asset management, generating attractive risk-adjusted returns over a long-term holding period. Company is currently seeking two (2) portfolio controllers to join this dynamic team.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Portfolio Controller will have overall responsibility for accounting operations, financial reporting and treasury management for a specific portfolio of individual investments and joint venture entities.  Supervision, review, and mentoring of staff and senior accountants assigned to portfolio. Supervision of financial statement preparation for a portfolio of properties prepared on a GAAP basis (mod-cash basis for some corporate entities), including G/L review/analysis, preparation of BS support, month end accruals, amortization/depreciation entries, review any significant variances and update financial result information on month end asset management template for property managers to complete narratives Preparation of quarterly and annual consolidated GAAP financial statements for the fund Coordination of annual audits and tax return preparation of assigned portfolio Perform periodic internal audits of individual property management operations Liaison with property management personnel on accounting related items for assigned portfolio, ensure compliance with contractual property accounting deadlines Review property management fee calculations for assigned portfolio of properties Assist in budget review and/or preparation for assigned property portfolio and corporate entities Assist in annual property valuation process Ensure all property taxes and sales taxes are paid timely Monitor and analyze consolidated fund cash positions and projections to assist Controller and CFO with cash management decisions Recruiting, training and supervision of Staff Accountants and Accounting Associate team members Supervise financial and property management system set-up for new acquisitions Provide feedback on and assist in implementation of internal policies and procedures to help ensure efficient and effective workflow and strong internal controls May assist with due diligence on potential acquisitions Preparation of initial cost allocations for new acquisitions

 

REQUIREMENTSMinimum of five (5) years of related accounting experienceStrong knowledge of GAAPExtensive working knowledge of real estate accounting software packages (Yardi preferred) as well as MS Office products (Excel / Word). Ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret complex business documents. A strong communicator. Able to effectively respond both written and verbally to questions, and complex inquiries.Public accounting experience is a plus. Ability to work well in a deadline oriented environment, with a pro-active, “thinking out of the boxâ€� attitude. A multi-tasker, with strong organizational skillsBachelor’s degree in Accounting or related disciplineCPA preferred, but not required
