Sr. Accounting Consultant-Technical

This is a Senior Accounting Consultant position in the Investments Technical Accounting Group of the Investments Financial Management department of MetLife. The Senior Accounting Consultant will be responsible for researching investments technical accounting questions / issues and writing issue papers and accounting policies. The Senior Accounting Consultant will also assist with accounting policy implementation and follow-up for the investments accounting departments. Major Duties and Functions Include: Perform research to resolve investments technical accounting questions / issues and formulate and document appropriate conclusions (e.g., suppose the MetLife front office would like to invest in a new type of investment, the Senior Accounting Consultant will be responsible for researching and documenting the appropriate accounting treatment for the investment) Work with the investments traders in MetLife’s front office on structuring investments prior to the signing of the deal documents or purchasing of investments to ensure that the investments are structured in a manner that will result in favorable accounting treatment Conduct interviews with investments accounting personnel to develop an understanding of MetLife’s accounting practices and document investments accounting policies (i.e., policy documentation will be required for the various investments held by MetLife including securities, partnership interests, mortgages, real estate and leases) Coordinate review and approval of documented investments accounting policies and issue papers with the corporate technical accounting group and external auditors Assist with accounting policy implementation and follow-up for the investments accounting departments to ensure that practices are in accordance with accounting policies Assist with the implementation of new GAAP and statutory accounting pronouncements and interpretations for all of the investments accounting departments Continually monitor the actions of the FASB (GAAP accounting) and the NAIC (statutory accounting) related to investments topics and effectively communicate any applicable developments and guidance issuances to the investments accounting departments via a quarterly department-wide e-mail communication Review the accounting policies footnote and recent accounting pronouncements footnote for MetLife’s SEC filings and audited subsidiary financial statements and provide comments and revisions to the investments reporting department Assist the investments accounting departments with the evaluation of certain investments under the guidance within FIN 46(R) Manage and mentor an Accounting Consultant What You Need to Succeed: Bachelor’s degree in accounting preferred Either 4-5 years Big 4 public accounting experience in audit (primarily for-profit companies) OR at least 3 years Big 4 public accounting experience in audit (primarily for-profit companies) plus 2+ years private industry experience CPA preferred Background in technical accounting Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Attention to detail Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously Ability to follow through Experience with Microsoft Office applications ***Background in investments accounting recommended but not required ***Experience with SFAS 140 and/or FIN 46(R) a plus Work shouldn’t be something you do just to make ends meet.
