The essential responsibility of a Business Analyst is to be the primary systems requirements specifier. This entails detailing the specifications for the target systems, or a part of the target systems, functionality by describing the requirements of one or several use cases in concert with other supporting software requirements. The Business Analyst may also be responsible for one or more use case packages, the integrity of that package, and its contents.
A Business Analyst needs superior communication skills, both person-to-person and written. Knowledge of business and technology domains is also important. A Business Analyst must be familiar with all tools used to capture the results of the requirements discipline.
Skills and knowledge should include:
- Excellent analytical skills
- An inquiring mind
- Attention to detail and tenacity
- Understanding of common software failures and faults
- Knowledge of the domain (highly desirable)
- Knowledge of the system or application under test (highly desirable)
- Experience in a variety of testing efforts (desirable)
A Business Analyst must be prepared to:
- Assess the situation of the target organization where the project's end product will be deployed
- Understand customer and user requirements, their strategies, and their goals
- Facilitate modeling of the target organization
- Discuss and facilitate a business engineering effort
- Perform cost/benefit analyses for any suggested changes in the target organization
- Discuss and support those who market and sell the end product of the project
- Take part in defining requirements on the end product of the project
Leads and coordinates:
- Requirements elicitation
- Use case modeling by outlining the system's functionality and delimiting the system
- Business use case modeling by outlining and delimiting the organization being modeled
A Business Analyst:
- Is a good facilitator and has excellent communication skills
- Possesses extensive knowledge of the business and technology domains
- Annotates the detailed specifications for the part of the organization in question by describing the workflow of one or several business use cases
- Specifies the business workers and business entities needed to realize a business use case, and distributes the behavior of the business use case to these
- Defines the responsibilities, operations, attributes, and relationships of one or several business workers and business entities
- Creates and develops the business architecture
- Needs to be familiar with tools used to capture the business models
- Participates in formal reviews of the business use case model and business object model
Involvement in testing:
- Initially identifies and subsequently defines required tests
- Monitors test coverage and evaluates the overall quality experienced when testing the target test items
- Identifies the target test items to be evaluated by the test effort
- Defines the appropriate tests required and any associated test data
- Specifies the required test data
- Gathers and manages the test data
- Evaluates the outcome of the testing conducted in each test cycle
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate has 8+ years of industry experience with at least 6+ years in a Business Analysis role. The candidate additionally has the ability to design standards for Business/Technical Analysis with regard to customer approaches, software development methodology and life cycle, and interfaces with the Strategy and User/Design groups.
