Position Description:
Scope of ResponsibilitiesThe Publicist works with the Directors in the Corporate Communications and Media Relations Department to strategize and coordinate media outreach, integrated communications planning, and special events that will generate ongoing positive publicity for various divisions within Scholastic. The position will work on many of the consumer and corporate programs for Scholastic and should have experience working with consumer media outlets. Candidate must have a working background in publicity and have strong communication, pitching and writing skills.Specific job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:Brainstorm creative ideas for capturing media attention for products, programs, company executives, and the brand.Write press releases and media advisories and handle distributionCreate and maintain targeted media lists Aggressively pitch stories to a wide range of media outlets and develop and nurture good relationships with media contactsMeet with internal “clients” in various divisions of Scholastic to gather information, participate in long-term planning, and make recommendations for creating media opportunitiesOrganize and maintain press packets and other promotional materialsSet up interviews for company spokespersons and prepare well-crafted talking pointsPursue media opportunities in social media outlets Required Competencies: Proven success at securing stories in national, local and online media outletsAbility to write clear, persuasive copy using SEO tactics Ability to handle intense deadline pressureAttention to detail, accuracy and diligent fact-checkingKnowledge of and ability to pursue opportunities with bloggers and social media outlets
Qualifications:
BA or higher and minimum 2 years experience in public relationsStrong communication skills for pitching mediaExcellent writing abilityAbility to juggle multiple assignments and prioritize projectsAbility to work independently and as a member of the teamStrong interpersonal skills and professional presentationAbility to interact effectively with clients and mediaWillingness to work long hours when neededPlease note:Include salary requirements in your cover letter.Scholastic Inc. is an Equal Opportunity Employer.M/F/D/V
