Job Description Aviation Week, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies, is the largest multimedia information provider to the aviation and aerospace industry.  It offers real-time news, professional information and e-business features. AW is in search of an experienced and talented Business Manager. This Business Manager is responsible for the financial and business administration of AVIATION WEEK’S AW&ST, DTI and BCA properties, along with the development and implementation of strategies, and the counseling of department heads towards the achievement of those goals. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES  Directs the coordination of the business unit’s over all financial plans and forecasts to ensure compliance with corporate and market focus of group and financial/strategic goals. Coordinates the preparation of annual budgets of the sales, editorial, marketing, circulation, service, and managerial areas of the business units. Responsible for maintaining business unit’s balance sheets and signing quarterly representation letter to vouch for the validity of said Balance Sheets and Income Statements. Compiles monthly estimates derived from various unit heads, which are in turn conveyed to Monthly Estimate reports and Monthly Operating Reports for each specific property. The Business Manager is responsible for the coordination of the planning aspect, working with various department heads, and group management to ensure the business unit’s strategies are in concert with the group. Directs and supervises the business administration operation of the business units.  This requires consultation with editorial, marketing, circulation, and manufacturing areas in cost control and development of effective business systems to ensure that deadlines are met.  In addition, establishes and maintains relations with outside vendors and agencies. Reviews any new project initiatives to test for reasonability of revenue and NOI impact to business units.  Provide ad hoc reports to Sales/Marketing VP, President and Director of Finance as needed. Ensure compliance with Sarbanes Oxley and other legal requirements.  Other responsibilities include working with Sales Managers and Sales Staff to validate revenues estimates. Other responsibilities include the supervision of office management covering personnel, office maintenance, and cash disbursement.Other duties directly related to the business units includes counseling managers on all financial matters, assisting VP Sales with the preparation of sales contracts and coordination of annual payroll reviews and preparation of new product business plans. Special projects as may be assigned by the Director of Finance of the Aviation Week Group.KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE A BS degree in accounting along with 5 –7 years experience.  MBA/CPA preferred, specific experience in a publishing environment desired but not necessary. Analytical skills, the ability to conceptualize strategic alternatives and analyze financial data for the purposes of maximizing operational profitability and providing useful information for non-financial decisions.  Excellent PC skills and strong presentation skills.  Knowledge of Lawson and/or OFA a plus. The Business Manager plays a significant role in maintaining and updating cost control systems to effectively monitor on-going profitability and requisite forecasts. Counsel management on interim results and develop strategies to ensure that goals are achieved. The Business Manager must review industry economic trends in order to create and recommend solutions or alternatives to the department heads while informing them of the financial implications. Business Manager must be able to generate ad hoc reports, and work as a liaison between management and staff.
