Chemical Maintenance Technician
Skills, Inc., Aerospace and Commercial Manufacturing & Finishing, seeks a full-time chemical maintenance technician (CMT). The CMT supports production of anodized aluminum through monitoring, testing, and adjusting the process tanks according to quality control system requirements, specifications and procedures, as well as through pumping and treating spent solutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Ø Daily testing of metal removal rate in alkaline etching process and hydration rate in sealing process. Maintains precise recordkeeping of testing data.
Ø Daily testing of process solutions and waste streams using hand-held and inline meters. Precise recordkeeping of measurements including digital data entry. Typical data and tests include pH, total dissolved solids, temperatures, and fluid volumes.
Ø Safely weighing, moving, and adding liquid and dry chemicals to tanks as directed.
Ø Safely moving solutions via pneumatically driven pumps.
Ø Waste reduction and environmental compliance using established methods of chemistry. Through direction and instruction the CMT pumps various spent solutions to waste treatment tanks, performs chemical precipitation, ampoule-based testing, and makes logbook entries under supervision. Following precipitation of the regulated waste material, the CMT dewaters using a sludge press, removes filtered sludge, and shovels into a 55 gallon drum. The CMT is responsible for properly labeling and securing the waste material.
Ø Loading and unloading barrels of chemicals using a forklift. Skills, Inc. provides training for certification.
Ø Weekly sampling of solutions for offsite laboratory analysis.
Qualifications

General
Ø Follows written, oral, and demonstrated procedures involving precise weighing, measuring and timing, basic algebraic calculations, and accurate hand-written and digital data logging.
Ø Follows written, oral, and demonstrated procedures involving the safe and logical transfer of liquid and solid chemicals used in metal finishing.
Ø Ability to solve practical problems and manage time in a construct of changing variables and situations.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent; some college level education in chemistry; one year experience in the handling of chemicals; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Ø Ability to lift 50 pounds, move barrels with a drum truck, use a motorized hoist, open and close sample jars, cans, boxes, etc. Must be physically able to wear a respirator.
Ø Industrial plant setting with time spent in a combination of anodize shop/waste treatment area, laboratory, and office.
