Engineer II - Mechanical

 

The System Modeling Methods group has an opening for a mechanical engineer with a combination of experience in thermodynamics and software engineering applying the latest in computer technologies to mechanical engineering.

 

The qualified applicant will join an existing team of engineers and software developers that are developing an integrated suite of performance and mechanical system design modeling software for conceptual system design. The toolset is used by over 200 engineers and has been used to design subsystem hardware on aerospace platforms from general aviation planes to military fighters.

 

Responsibilities will include software development, in particular thermodynamic and component performance algorithms, integration and customization with user-friendly interfaces, documentation, user training, and regular support of the application to current programs. Communication of development status to end-users and management is required. A strong academic background, including courses in physics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, gas dynamics, and mathematics, is needed. Practical experience in thermodynamic cycle design is beneficial, especially for refrigeration, HVAC or thermal control-related equipment.

Basic Qualifications:

Candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent,a dual degree in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science is a plus. Candidate must have a knowledge of software engineering fundamentals. This includes software development processes, architecture, coding (including C++), software configuration management and high level software languages (including the Microsoft .Net framework). Experience in numerical analysis, multiphase fluid flow, and calibration of models with experiments is required.

Additional Qualifications:Strong thermodynamic system design expertise. Programming experience a plus. Experience with web development, fortran, and Matlab are preferable. Must be highly motivated, willing to learn, and have a strong belief in the goals of the project and be willing to serve as an advocate. Must be able to think as and be capable of making decisions for the end-user to develop effective software.
