General Machinist Position Description General Machinists within an assigned machining area must completely and independently setup, adjust, and regularly operate a variety of precision machines such as lathes, planers, grinders, milling machines, and boring machines to perform machining functions. Determine method and sequence of work operations. Select, devise, develop and fabricate shop aids required to complete work assignments. Set up and operate a universal precision CNC machine, which routinely performs a variety of functions, such as but not limited to turning, boring and milling. May include programming and operation of NC and CNC machines, Employment in this position also requires lifting and pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds, rotation of head/neck, bending and twisting at the waist, walking, standing, kneeling, reaching, grasping, sitting, flexion/extension, use of low impact vibratory tools, contact with metals, exposure to noise, dusts and fumes, shaking objects and surfaces, and the use of personal safety gear for face/eyes, hand/arm, ears and feet. Check machine set-up and/or parts completed by previous operator, as required. Ensure safe working conditions by verifying that machine is in good condition. Prepare to set-up job by ensuring work order, tie-in sheets, operators or setup documents and drawings are avail to be worked. Select proper machine accessories, ensure that the tools or fixtures are free from visible defects. Check work during each operation to determine progress on a job and that there are no defects. Using overhead crane, electric stacker and pallet jacks, as required to move material or machine accessories. Retrieve and download programs to machine controller using computing equipment and downloading from various servers/data bases. Create own Programs for CNC machines as required utilizing programming software provided. Perform editing of programs per shop requirements, as required. Select and check to ensure cutters or drills are the correct type, length, diameter, and are sharp and in good condition. Load and unload tools, replace worn, chipped, and defective tools, check and or adjust overall tool length. Operate the machine and monitor machine settings, adjust as necessary to correct machining problems or to prepare for next operation in sequence to rough or finish machine detail parts. Monitor machine during operation for unusual vibration or sounds. Per NC/CNC documents set machine coordinates or index points including cutter offset/compensations, tool heights, and probes. Perform assembly work and surface finishing as required. Assist other employees with set up Competencies Applicants must possess a broad knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures and machinability of materials. Be skilled in the selection, set-up and operation of the appropriate tool(s) for a given type of work. They must be able to work with a variety of materials such as: aluminum, titanium, steel, and CFRP. Be skilled in the operation of, manual and CNC machines such as, mills and turning centers. Be willing to learn how to operate more complex machining equipment using, multi-axis mills and turning centers. Previous experienced in the use of CadCam software to generate both 2-D and 3-D cutter paths. Be willing to learn shop-specific programming software (currently Mastercam). Be able to relate to and work on any type of geometric configuration. Must have the ability to perform quality self-checks and perform close tolerance machining. Use math that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals and fractions including algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints. Capable of visualizing a three-dimensional shape from a two-dimensional view, converting left-hand to right-hand views and understanding symbols, flag notes, general notes and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Operate computing equipment to access job information such as, drawings, blueprints, specifications and other online information systems. Operate computing equipment to perform job tasks such as, uploading or downloading of programs, creating or editing of CNC programs. Must have knowledge of the machine coordinate system and be able to identify multiple axes. Use various types of hand tools and or hand-held power tools. Use various jigs and fixtures to orient detailed part for machining. Set-up and operate various conventional and or numerically controlled machines (NC/CNC) to fabricate close tolerance, high quality parts from metals, plastics and composite materials. Visualize complete machining process in order to create proper and safe setups and machining procedures. Work alone and or independently. Think before acting, anticipate outcome of an action, know if something looks wrong and ask questions when necessary. Follow oral/written instructions provided by the lead, team leader, supervisor and/or engineering. Ability to welcome challenges as opportunities, embrace new machining techniques, work well within a team environment, and effectively communicate to team members and support groups. Coordinate daily tasks with others to align priorities for smooth operation of joint workloads. Determine if own work is complete and correct as specified by instructions, drawings and specifications. Possess knowledge of the proper use, handling and disposal of hazardous materials per government regulations and Boeing procedures. Ensure a safe working practice by having knowledge of safe working practices, emergency procedures and possible dangerous situations. Operate man aboard electric stackers in a safe manner. Operate overhead cranes in a safe manner. Education and/or Experience High School Graduate or GED. Prefer Journeyman Machinist: 5+ years varied machine shop experience. Training/experience in PC-based Cad/Cam software required. MasterCam and CATIA desirable. Machinist apprenticeship preferred.
