The Aerospace Corporation, established in 1960, is a private, nonprofit corporation that operats an FFRDC sponsored by the United States Air Force, providing objective technical analyses and assessments for space programs that serve the national interest. As the FFRDC for national-security space, Aerospace supports long-term planning and the immediate needs of our nation's military and reconnaissance space programs.
DESCRIPTION
Will exercise and apply in-depth expertise with inertial sensors and associated electronics by performing component-level modeling, simulation, etst, and experimentation activities to a variety of programs and customers spanning launch vehicles, satellites, and aircraft programs. Responsibilities may include: tracking the state-of-the-art in inertial sensor technologies, development of component-level inertial sensor models, analysis of system-level impacts resulting from component-level constraints (e.g. impact to attitude determination systems or CONOPS), and participation in independent reviews and pedigree audits. Studies involving interactions with other technical deisciplines may be required. Support to operational activities may be required. Extensive travel may be required. Primary duties will be: to advise the customer on all aspects of gyroscope acquisition related to their programs; to direct and assist the contractor efforts through design, test, evaluation, and implementation challenges; and finally, to lead or participate in on-orbit anomaly resolution. The focus of the position is gyroscope specialization, but may include exposure to broader technologies and applications such as star trackers, focal plane arrays, accelerometers, and magneto-hydrodynamic sensors.
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor degree and a minimum of eight (8) years of industry experience in the gyro field is required. Advanced or graduate-level degree in any of the Aerospace, Aeronautical, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Electromechanical engineering disciplines is highly desired. Requires an in-depth knowledge of ring laser gyros, fiber-optic gyros, hemispherical resonator gyros, and mechanical gyros as they relate specifically to precision pointing applications in space. An extensive knowledge of military specifications and testing standards is required. Familiarity with gyro piece parts and materials such as fiber channels, Lithium Niobate, and modulation schemes, integrated optics chip, super luminescent diodes, etc. is highly desired. Expertise with developing/evaluating calibration and alignment procedures for inertial sensors, as well as related error estimation and modeling, is desired. Strong communication skills, both oral and written are essential.
