Manager Administration: Community Services (Full Time/ Unaccompanied)


Responsibilities:
MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• The Media Services Manager ensures the U.S. Army’s message is provided to the community of the U.S. Army Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands in support of the USAKA commander and public affairs officer. This message is disseminated via The Kwajalein Hourglass and the local American Forces Network.
• The Kwajalein Hourglass is the only local newspaper available to the residents of Kwajalein and Roi-Namur, and as such is truly a community newspaper. The Media Services Manager must ensure that all communications products are consistently excellent, while sometimes working under difficult restraints. The Media Services Manager must be able to balance the needs of the community with the needs of the Army and provide fair and balanced coverage of events.
• AFN Kwajalein provides residents with programs from AFRTS, as well as providing local information via the Roller. The Media Services Manager must help ensure that local information gets disseminated quickly and accurately.
• The Media Services Manager has hands-on responsibility for the weekly newspaper, including being the primary writer and photographer. At times the Media Services Manager must also layout and design the paper using Adobe InDesign. The Media Services Manager assists the Kwajalein Range Services leadership in creating strategic communications plans and ensuring the KRS safety and news communications are appropriately released via the newspaper and the local radio and/or television service.
• Ensures newspaper is published within compliance of AR360-1.
• Ensures AFN operations fall within guidelines of DoD Directive 5120-20.
• The Media Services Manager must act as a community relations officer, ensuring that Host Nation-related issues released in a sensitive and timely manner in accordance to the requirements of USAKA. This position requires working a variety of hours, often in evenings and on the weekends.



Requirements:
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Must have at least five years hands-on experience in either electronic or print journalism, preferably in a military community.
Must have at least three years management experience.
Must have hands-on experience as a writer, photographer and with layout and design using Adobe InDesign.
Must have excellent knowledge of the Associated Press Stylebook. Must be able to work independently, and yet also be a key part of a team.
Must be able to develop and maintain good relationships with a variety of individuals on and off island to ensure that all possible communications avenues are open.
Must have excellent attention to detail and copy editing skills.
Preferred: understanding of video production and post-production process.
EDUCATION:
Bachelors degree in print or electronic journalism preferred, as well as graduate of the. Defense Information School.
