That's why we're here. Manufacturing Engineer 4 - ARES US Program Position Description Ares US Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV) for NASA's Constellation program. The Ares I Rocket uses a solid rocket booster for the First Stage and a liquid oxygen/hydrogen J-2X engine for the Upper Stage. Responsibilities: This position is responsible for conducting producibility & tooling analyses at the program level to verify that design features are compatible with selected manufacturing processes. Specific responsibilities include developing procedures, standards, protocols and reporting requirements, as well as influencing design features and processes to ensure products can be efficiently produced. Tasks include: documenting results of producibility assessments to communicate design/build plan and requirements; consultation on the identification, investigation and approval of product and process improvements; leading teams to evaluate new technologies and guides implementation; establishing requirements, monitors new technologies and makes recommendations for use; implements new technologies; influences design/build concepts to achieve a producible design/build definitions; and incorporating producibility activities in project plans and presents plans at reviews. Addition responsibilities include establishment of a design guide at the program level and for developing procedures/protocols for producibility assessments. Position will interface and coordinate with both internal and external team members and program leadership, including suppliers, for requirement development, reviews, allocation and decomposition of requirements to provide manageable limits at all levels of the design using a variety of data reporting methods such as Integrated Product Definition (IPD), Data Sheet (DS) and Interface Control Models (ICM). Position requires proficiency with software applications including: Word, Excel, Project, Access, and Visio, PRO-E, DELMIA. Independently identifies project resource requirements, integrate and direct multi project elements into a single collective overall project plan. Ability to direct, delegate and ensure performance of assigned responsibilities and tasks as a project team leader in support of the overall large scale and complex projects. Technical [ + ] Computer Aided Design Tools Ability to manipulate complex computer aided design tools and systems (e.g., computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), computer aided three dimensional interactive (CATIA), Mentor Graphics, Unigraphics). Able to build and manipulate complex data sets, (e.g., compare CATIA to measurement data, create stereo lithography files). [ + ] Design Concepts & Techniques Extensive knowledge of design concepts and techniques (e.g., concurrent engineering, Design for Manufacture/Assembly [DFM/A]). [ + ] Engineering Process Imprv Mthd Wide-ranging knowledge of producibility and process improvement methodologies (e.g., statistical process control [SPC], Hardware Variability Control [HVC], 6-Sigma). Able to create process improvement and testing methodology. [ + ] Manufacturing Methods Advanced knowledge of manufacturing, methods, fabrication processes (e.g., forming, stamping, machining, heat treatment, machines/machine tools, cutting tools and fluids, N/C programming, instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems). Ability to select the best method of producing parts, tools or assemblies. [ + ] Operations Improvement Apply extensive knowledge of Industrial Engineering process improvement strategies and Lean techniques (e.g., methods analysis, work combination charts, ergonomics, TOC, 3P, Six Sigma, AIW, LMA, visual controls, safety) to analyze and improve operations. [ + ] Process Management Skills Extensive and specialized ability to determine the process to be used to accomplish goals, properly document processes, know how to organize people and activities, understand how to separate and combine tasks into efficient work flow, identify opportunities for synergy and integration, and simplify complex processes. Education and/or Experience Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry and typically 9 to 13 years experience in an engineering classification or either a Master's degree with 7 to 11 years experience or a PhD degree with 4 to 8 years experience in an engineering classification. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
