LOCATION: CENTENNIAL, CO 80015 Meteorologist 08-09 Raytheon Polar Services - Experience Antarctica Seeking a unique adventure as well as employment? Raytheon Polar Services is the primary contractor for the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) U.S. Antarctic Program. We are currently looking for Meteorologist to deploy to McMurdo, South Pole or Palmer research stations on a contract basis beginning in August of 2008. There are three lengths for the contracts: Summer-(Approximately) August or October through February, Winter-(Approximately) February through October, and Year-Long-(Approximately) October through October. We are looking for Primary and Alternate employees to fill all contract positions. The Primary is first in line for the position. The Alternate is next in line to deploy should the Primary be unable to meet deployment requirements. Duties and Responsibilities -Under the general guidance of the station Meteorologist, Senior, the incumbent supports research activities, aircraft operations, climatological, surface and upper air programs. -Prepares, launches and monitors upper air sounding equipment and evaluates, encodes, decodes and transmits the acquired data to organizations worldwide in a timely manner. -Observes, records and encodes surface weather in METAR and synoptic WMO coded format on an hourly basis during the austral summer, and on a six hourly basis during the winter. -Assists in the preparation of the weekly, monthly and annual climatological and administrative reports. Actively participates in station quality control standards ensuring the accuracy of all distributed meteorological data and in maintaining the long-term climatological database. Monitors specific meteorological parameters for research groups. -Provides overall coordination for preventive maintenance, repair, and operation of the station meteorological systems with the Meteorologist, Senior and Meteorological Technician. -Assists in maintaining inventory controls and logs for the department. -Conducts all operations in accordance with the RPSC Station Operations Manual and standard operating procedures. -As required, actively participates in other general station operations including assistance in keeping buildings clean, re-supply and inventorying of station supplies, galley support, and cargo handling. -Performs other duties as required. Required Experience -Bachelor of Science degree required. Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of a degree. - One year of training/experience as a meteorologist, meteorologist technician or weather observer in the operation of upper air sounding equipment and making meteorological observations is required. Preferred Experience -Degree in Meteorology preferred. -Certification from the National Weather Service or other agency in both synoptic and METAR observations desirable. Additional Polar Information Contract compensation includes reimbursement of expenses to physically qualify, weekly salary, travel to and from the ice, room & board, and you are eligible for a performance based bonus upon successful completion of your contract.
