ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS OF MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR:
Performs the following duties, and other required activities as assigned. Must demonstrate competencies necessary to meet business requirements. May perform as a member or leader of a functional and/or cross-functional team. Operates and maintains automotive, construction, and material handling equipment. Makes material pickups and deliveries from and to vendors within Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Works in adverse conditions such as snow removal. Some work is performed during late evening and early morning hours.
Operates a variety of gas and diesel powered passenger carrying vehicles including buses up to 60 passengers and cargo trucks or truck tractors with trailers or semi-trailer coupled by use of a turn-table fifth wheel or pintle hook up to 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight in all weather conditions. These vehicles can be equipped with manual or automatic transmissions. They can also be equipped with air-brake connections between the truck or truck tractor and trailer or semi-trailer.
Plans load based on delivery routing and directs loading of vehicle to insure efficiency in making deliveries. Assists in loading and unloading trucks. Secures loads in vehicles to prevent movement, damage, or loss to cargo and/or vehicle. Checks material received against bill of lading to insure against discrepancies. Responsible for reporting discrepancies in loads and reasons for these discrepancies. Responsible for receipt of loads delivered. Maintains daily vehicle log. Performs daily routine safety inspections and performs first echelon maintenance as well as minor repairs associated with the operation of motor vehicles. May be required to operate special purpose vehicles as needed.
EDUCATION REQUIRED:
High School Graduate required. Must be able to read, speak, and understand the English language.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Commercial vehicle driving experience required. Automotive, construction, material handling, and maintenance experience helpful.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
Must be able to read and understand manuals, repair orders, simple drawings and sketches.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be physically fit and able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Work requires extensive walking, bending, stooping, and climbing and sometimes working in awkward positions. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather as required. Some overtime work on nights and weekends may be required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (e.g. driver’s license, special tools, or restrictions, etc.) Must possess a valid state driver’s license. Must possess a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Must possess or be able to obtain and possess a Secret Clearance. Must be able to operate vehicles for manufacturing operations. Must be familiar with and adhere to safety procedures and state and federal traffic regulations and laws. Required to pass written and skilled driver tests. Must be able to work with other tradespersons on a team.
