Project Engineer - Design POSITION SUMMARYSeeking a Project Engineer experienced in design of plastic or composite mechanical components to develop or improve existing products while minimizing cost, enhancing performance, or facilitating manufacturing operations. Design products or systems of diverse/difficult scope and complexity. Ensures timely and efficient completion of detailed engineering projects to achieve company cost and customer service objectives. Acts as project leader with technical responsibility for design planning, organizing, and conducting technical projects or phases of projects involving design and development of new or improved products and/or processes. RESPONSIBILITIES- Strong knowledge of structural and filled thermoplastic materials properties and characteristics, especially PEEK, RYTON, TORLON, ULTEM and other structural thermoplastic materials.- Investigates pertinent material characteristics as the effect strength and performance in extreme environments as experiences on aircraft. How the performance characteristics affect design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, contractual specification requirements, cost-determining optimum solutions.- Prepares or directs and reviews testing projects for structural thermoplastics. Defines and executes testing plans and objectives, schedule, resources of thermoplastic testing programs, supervision of test service, tooling design, test procedures, data collection, data management and utilization. Management of technical teams comprising of internal and external resources.- Prepares or directs and reviews preparation of prototype product or system layout and detailed drawings, assembly drawings, and schematics by coordinating with designers, drafters, or other engineers, interpreting customer and functional requirements, or by using engineering computer-aided design tools and following industry and/or military drawing standards. REQUIREMENTS- B.S. or M.S. degree in plastics, mechanical, or aerospace engineering or a related technical discipline preferred. Equivalent design experience may be considered- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the job typically acquired through eight or more years of related experience.- The ideal candidate will have experience of using the following 3D CAD packages: Catia V4 or 5, Pro-Engineer, MoldFlow and FEA stress analysis packages software.- Experience within the aerospace industry and will be working on thermoplastic, composite and highly reinforced injection molded plastic components. Strong experience of techniques such as injection molding, transfer molding, compression molding, thermoforming, vacuum forming, tooling, blow mold or extrusion experience, pre-preg lay-up and castings. - Strong knowledge of polymer properties and characteristics, especially PEEK, RYTON, TORLON, ULTEM and other structural thermoplastic materials.- Working knowledge of injection molding processing and effect of mold design on part cost, performance, and appearance. - Strong expertise of testing techniques for structural thermoplastics, structuring and management of test programs, supervision of test service, molding and other suppliers, - Manages prototype thermoplastic designs of new and existing metal products of diverse/difficult scope and complexity for assigned programs using a variety of engineering principles from mechanical, electrical, packaging, or other engineering disciplines.
