The Mechanical Engineering Products Organization within ITT Space Systems Division in Rochester, NY, is looking for a Sr. Mechanism Design Engineer. In this position, you wouldProvide engineering design and analysis in solving mechanism development problems for a wide range of products, projects, or programs for the Space Systems Division's Engineering business unit. Scope and Principle Duties: (A. Specific)Plan, coordinate, and perform mechanism design and testing activities. Provide expertise in use of analytical tools required to direct design teams on analytical approach to accomplish objectives. Distill and translate high level project requirements into specific direction provided to teams.Provide expertise in finite element analysis, analytical methods in statics, dynamics, and thermo-elastic problems. A working knowledge of electronics and controls is also required.Provide SSD with expertise in and interface between analytical and experimental methods for assessing and characterizing mechanism behavior and robustness. Working expertise in experimental methods including thermal-vacuum, modal survey, random vibration, static load and shock tests. Provide expertise in analytical methods required to develop analytical predictions of the behavior of mechanisms in these test environments.Interface with customer and associates in technical interchange meetings. Communicate effectively and serve as a spokesperson for ITT on mechanism topics. Provide ability to represent ITT in verbal and written form.(B. General)Provides technical expertise in a broad field of engineering, research, evaluation and development for highly complex and technical space-based aerospace products. Uses the application of engineering standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Designs, develops, tests and verifies complex engineering tasks in electrical, mechanical, optical, software, systems, and/or hardware components. Work will encompass a wide range of sophisticated (cross-discipline) engineering problem resolutions. The role involves design and development engineering assignments related to products and systems including the engineering of new products or updates to existing products. Job Specifications and Work Performed:(A) SpecificPlan the activities of mechanism design team required to meet technical and schedule objectives.Create and exercise (NASTRAN) finite element analysis models and distil output into meaningful results.Provide mechanism design expertise to engineering teams.Write reports summarizing the results obtained and outcome of the analytical and hardware testing or verification.Define testing requirements.Provide design-review briefings to summarize the activities and conclusions of design-phase activities.(B) General- Creates, develops, and designs complex mechanisms, systems and equipment which require a broad knowledge of several fields and an extensive knowledge of own specialty.- Prepares theoretical studies of involved technical subjects that find wide application to design problems- Studies the basic design ideas and methods proposed by other engineering personnel: consults available technical data, analyzes previous design, utilizes specialized knowledge, and proposes improvements or modifications to the basic design ideas and layouts which would be more effective and involve less risk.- Confers with engineering personnel and customer representatives to assure proper consideration of customer requirements. Collaborates with other engineers in order to assure proper compromise on the best design in the interest of basic and practical considerations.- Prepares technical descriptions of basic designs, and engineering estimates for inclusion in bids and proposals or presentations to customers.- Plans design layouts in order to study the operation, select major components, assure conformance to functional and operating requirements, and determine the optimum location and arrangement from an engineering, manufacturing and maintainability standpoint.- Presents designs to Design Review Boards.- Analyzes engineering plans and projects to establish operating data and conducts experimental tests; analyzes proposals and related technical data to develop design alternatives.- Prepares progress reports relating to assignments as required. Confers with vendors to discuss physical and performance characteristics of proposed parts, components, and equipment for application to assigned equipment. Prepares specifications and design parameters for equipment to be designed and/or built by subcontractors.- Performs special assignments as requested. May be required to perform other assignments which are normally related to the work of higher or lower engineering classifications.- Develops and implements test procedures while selecting appropriate test instrumentation. - Interacts with design teams to determine the qualification and manufacturability of new technologies.- Maintains engineering notebooks in department approved repository for work products in accordance with established policy and procedures. Keeps abreast of the state-of-the-art by reading technical journals and publications. Requires B.S. degree, preferably in Engineering or in a technical area of science and research with 4-8 years work experience or a MS degree with 2-6 years work experience.Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
