We have an immediate need for a Senior Chemist. In this role you will: Under general direction and following established procedures, perform analyses on a variety of sample matrices for organic constituents by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) using EPA and in-house protocols. Primary analyses conducted will be the determination of volatile organic compounds in water and the determination of polychlorinated biphenyl compounds (PCBs) in oils and wipe samples. Peer review of analytical data, including electronic review of chromatographic data. Assist chemists and technicians in other areas as required. May coordinate with personnel in other disciplines as required. Requirements Bachelor's degree in an appropriate science (preferably Chemistry) with a minimum of five years of directly related technical experience in the field of environmental analytical chemistry or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The applicant must have practical hands-on knowledge and experience with the determination of volatile organic compounds by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) using EPA Method 8260. This individual must have well-developed skills and in-depth knowledge in the areas of sample preparation, standard preparation, analysis, chromatographic and mass spectral interpretation, data reduction, and standard environmental quality assurance protocols. The candidate must have strong troubleshooting capabilities and be able to provide effective maintenance for GC/MS instrumentation and associated equipment. In addition, hands-on experience with the gas chromatographic determination of PCBs using EPA Method 8082 is highly desired. This includes sample preparation/cleanup methods, analysis, maintenance and troubleshooting of gas chromatograph/electron capture detector systems, interpretation of PCB chromatographic patterns, and data reduction. Strong working knowledge of Agilent's ChemStation and Perkin Elmer's TotalChrom software packages is highly desired. Familiarity with other environmental disciplines (i.e. ion chromatography, atomic absorption/inductively coupled argon plasma spectroscopy, preparatory and/or analytical high performance liquid chromatography, and wet chemistry) is a plus. Well-developed oral and written communication skills are required. Must be able to work in a fast-paced teaming environment and must be able to manage short notice assignments with flexibility and speed.
