Senior Engineer - Hardware/Software
_ ITT Space Systems in Clifton (NJ) is seeking a Senior Engineer ' Hardware/Software to support related system engineering program activities. The duties include concept development, architecture development, top-level design, and detailed designs of space borne or ground systems. General Summary and Basic Function:Provides engineering services as a technical specialist in solving complex development problems in area of specialization or in implementing special and/or design engineering projects or to a wide range of products, projects or programs to the Space Systems Division's Engineering business unit. Scope and Principal Duties: Provides extensive technical expertise in a broad field of engineering, research, evaluation and development for highly complex and technical space-based aerospace products. Uses the application of engineering standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Designs, develops, tests and verifies complex engineering tasks in electrical, mechanical, optical, software, systems, and/or hardware components. Work will encompass a wide range of sophisticated (cross-discipline) engineering problem resolutions. The role involves design and development engineering assignments related to products and systems including the engineering of new products or updates to existing products. Job Specifications and Work Performed:' Creates, develops and designs complex and difficult mechanisms, systems and equipment which require a broad knowledge of several fields and an extensive knowledge of own specialty.' Prepares theoretical studies of involved technical subjects that find wide application to design problems or that are required where previous methods and techniques have not produced satisfactory results.' Plans design layouts in order to study the operation, select major components, assure conformance to functional and operating requirements, and determine the optimum location and arrangement from an engineering, manufacturing and maintainability standpoint.' Studies the basic design ideas and methods of approach proposed by other engineering personnel: consults available technical data, analyzes previous design, utilizes specialized knowledge, and proposes improvements or modifications to the basic design ideas and layouts which would be more effective and involve less risk.' Confers with engineering personnel and customer representatives to assure proper consideration of customer requirements. Collaborates with other engineers in order to assure proper compromise on the best theoretical design in the interest of basic and practical considerations.' Develops methods and techniques to be used for standardization of approach to specific design problems. Prepares technical descriptions of basic designs, and engineering estimates for inclusion in bids and proposals or presentations to customers.' Presents designs to Design Review Boards.' Represents the organization as a prime technical contact on contracts, projects or products. ' Analyzes engineering plans and projects to establish operating data and conducts experimental tests; analyzes proposals and related technical data to develop design alternatives.' Investigates problem areas and initiates corrective measures relating to the interpretation of technical data and the functioning of equipment during prototype construction or manufacturing phases and field installation.' Prepares progress reports relating to assignments as required. Confers with vendors to discuss physical and performance characteristics of proposed parts, components, and equipment for application to assigned equipment. Prepares specifications and design parameters for equipment to be designed and/or built by subcontractors.' Performs special assignments as requested. May be required to perform other assignments which are normally related to the work of higher or lower engineering classifications.' Develops and implements test procedures while selecting appropriate test instrumentation. ' Interacts with design teams to determine the qualification and manufacturability of new technologies.' Maintains engineering notebooks in department approved repository for work products in accordance with established policy and procedures. Keeps abreast of the state-of-the-art by reading technical journals and publications.Responsibility and Authority:An independent contributor or functions as a Group Leader or Supervisor. Exercises considerable latitude in determining methods and approach to engineering and job responsibilities. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective. Education and Experience:Requires B.S. degree, preferably in Engineering or in a technical area of science and research with 6 years work experience or a MS degree with 2 years work experience, or a PhD with no work experience. Experience will include four (4) years broad and extensive electronics engineering experience, two of which have been in a specialized field of endeavor.Experience in Digital, Analog, RF, and/or Signal Processing hardware development and experience with object oriented programming is required. Must be able to develop specifications, design documents, test methodology and documents. Ability to develop presentations. Hands on experience in tools such as DOORS, System Architect, CORE, Rhapsody and MatLab are desired.Knowledge Required -- Advanced and comprehensive knowledge in the field of specialization.Working Condition: General office environment, laboratory, manufacturing area, or research areas requiring the ability to stand or site for long periods of time. Personal protective equipment may be required to be used. Position requires the ability to work with computers and may be required to lift up to 25 pounds.Security Clearance:This position may require the passing of both a background investigation and polygraph to achieve a variety of compartmented national security clearances.
