Solar Power Chief Program Engineer

Hamilton Sundstrand Rocketdyne (HSR), part of the Space, Land and Sea (SLS) business unit of Hamilton Sundstrand is entering a new market area of providing specialized equipment for the purpose of generating electrical power from concentrated solar power (CSP) using molten salt and related technologies developed by Rocketdyne in the 1990 (`9s technologies. We are seeking a highly qualified individual to lead this exciting new area as the Chief Engineer for Solar Power.

HSR is located within the Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR) site in Canoga Park, California at the Desoto campus. There is a unique business arrangement with PWR in that many of the functions necessary to operate HSR are provided by PWR.

The HSR organization provides unique, highly engineered, reliable world class power systems to our customers. Current products include the electrical power system for the International Space Station, the Multi-Mission Radio Isotope Thermometric Generator (MMRTG) for space and planetary use, the power transfer unit for the Space Shuttle, and is a member of the NASA Constellation program Orion. HSR has developed technologies for solar power towers, including the Solar II in Dagett, California, and has been a sought after supplier for towers in Spain and South Africa. Solar energy provides an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach for obtaining electrical power in favorable climate regions.
Job Responsibilities:
* Ensure the technical excellence of all Solar program activities, including Systems Engineering & Integration and managing the core engineering support processes for solar.
* Ensure that engineering excellence is applied to all aspects of the product life cycle. Starting with proposal activities, making its way to conceptual design activities and leading to product design, fabrication, component and systems testing, activation, and transition to operational use.
* This position reports directly to the Chief Engineer, HSR, and matrixed to the CSP Program Manager.
* Responsible for all final technical decisions, including approvals for major component and system test reviews.
* Demonstrate experience in balancing technical requirements with schedule driven milestones without compromising program cost constraints and team sense of ownership.
* Integrate all issue/anomaly/UCR resolutions.
* Lead the Engineering Review Board (ERB).
* Support capture activity for the contract and follow-on efforts.
* Implement and enforce the Engineering Standard Work, Green Product design, and all prudent engineering initiatives in the key areas of the program.
* Assure that UTC standards of Ethics and Business Conduct are adhered to or exceeded by all members of the EPP team.
* Participate in the definition and prioritization of IAD and other process improvement programs as the Solar lead.
* Provide feedback to the Process Directors on their performance in supporting the Solar programs through CoQ (Cost of Quality) surveys and face-to-face meetings.


* BS in Engineering required.

*15 years of applicable experience required.
* Able to demonstrate strong team building and communication skills to rapidly establish and motivate a cross-functional team including HSR, Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR), customers, and subcontract personnel.
*Ability to work within the combined PWR/HSR environment.


* Strong people and communication skills required. Candidate must be able to retain a healthy working relationship with customer counterparts.
* Experience in dealing with customers and in integrating with cross-functional work teams is required.
* Demonstrated successful program management required, including the balance of technical, cost, and risk elements.
* Experience with power generation preferred.
