ITT Space Systems in FT Wayne (IN) is seeking a Sr Staff Engineer (I) to provide advanced engineering as a technical expert in solving complex problems in detector/focal plane array (FPA) and detector-related design development to a wide range of products, projects or programs for the Space Systems Division's Engineering business unit. Scope and Principal Duties: Possesses advanced expertise on detector/FPA (including associated electronic readouts, ROICs) design, test and integration. Research and development capabilities required for visible, near infrared and infrared space-based aerospace products. The ideal candidate is adept at employing engineering standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques which are innovative. Designs, develops, tests and verifies the function of simple to complex electro-optical components. Candidate works on a wide range of sophisticated (cross-discipline) engineering problem resolutions including interface of detector FPAs to optical components. The role involves design and development engineering assignments related to electro-optical products and systems including the engineering of new products or updates to existing products. Job Specifications and Work Performed:' Performance prediction for FPAs within the context of the system in which they are used. Prepares theoretical studies of detector and related ROIC performance.' Leads small design teams to determine the qualification and manufacturability of new detector and/or detector-calibration and test technologies. May function as organization spokesperson on advanced projects or programs as the engineering expert or authority. ' Strong interest in analyzing data related to detector/FPA performance to extract implications for system-level performance.' Provides effective interface to system-level design and development.' Maintains technical competence and state-of-the-art expertise in detectors and related electro-optical components. This is accomplished by reviewing technical publications and books, attending technical seminars and Company training, and taking academic courses. ' Determines and pursues courses of action necessary to obtain desired results. May lead R&D project or program team. ' Develops and maintains plans, schedules and budgets for assigned projects. Prepares for periodic management reviews as required to give management visibility on the status and progress of assigned projects. ' Studies the basic design ideas and methods of approach proposed by other engineering personnel: consults available technical data, analyzes previous designs, utilizes specialized knowledge, and proposes improvements or modifications to the basic design ideas and layouts which would be more effective and involve less risk.' Confers with Sr. Management, engineering personnel, and customer representatives to assure proper consideration of customer requirements. Collaborates with other engineers in order to assure proper compromise on the best theoretical design in the interest of basic and practical considerations.' Develops methods and techniques to be used for standardization of approach to specific design problems in electro-optics. Prepares technical descriptions of basic designs, and engineering estimates for inclusion in bids and proposals or presentations to customers.' Represents the organization as a prime technical contact on contracts, projects, or products. ' Analyzes engineering plans and projects to establish operating data and conducts experimental tests; analyzes proposals and related technical data to develop design alternatives.' Plans design and test layouts in order to study the operation, select major components, assure conformance to functional and operating requirements, and determine the optimum location and arrangement from an engineering, manufacturing and maintainability standpoint.' Investigates problem areas and initiates corrective measures relating to the interpretation of technical data and the functioning of equipment during prototype construction or manufacturing phases and field installation.' Prepares progress reports relating to assignments as required. Confers with vendors to discuss physical and performance characteristics of proposed parts, components, and equipment for application to assigned equipment. Prepares specifications and design parameters for equipment to be designed and/or built by subcontractors.' Maintains engineering notebooks in department approved repository for work products in accordance with established policy and procedures. Keeps abreast of the state-of-the-art by reading technical journals and publications. Responsibility and Authority:Independent contributor, project manager, or engineering lead who can function as organization spokesperson on advanced electro-optical projects or programs. Responsible for recognizing both adequate and inadequate design and implementation/calibration approaches for detector/FPAs within the context of the overall system. Responsible for ensuring that adequate attention is paid by systems engineering to risks associated with detector/FPA implementation within the system. Highly proficient and knowledgeable, and considered a technical leader in this key area. Must be able to communicate effectively using charts, graphs, and technical memos describing the observations and their implications to a wide audience including customers and senior management. Education and Experience:Requires B.S. degree, preferably in Engineering or in a technical area of science and research with 10-15 years work experience or a MS degree with 8+ years work experience, or a PhD with 5+ years work experience. Working Condition: General office environment, laboratory, manufacturing area, or research areas requiring the ability to stand or site for long periods of time. Personal protective equipment maybe required to be used. Position requires the ability to work with computers and lift up to 25 pounds.Security Clearance:This position may require the passing of both a background investigation and polygraph to achieve a variety of compartmented national security clearances.
