Job Description:

Provide thermal engineering support and develop thermal system technologies for space instrument and space system applications. Perform end-to-end thermal design, analysis and testing of space hardware; specify and procure thermal control hardware; design multi-layer-insulation; and thermal oversight of subcontracted systems. Define thermal requirements and generate thermal and thermal vacuum test plans and specifications for flight and engineering hardware.

 

Duties:

· Thermal design and analysis of space systems, instruments and components. Develop thermal models and conduct and conduct analyses to predict system thermal. Performance during flight conditions. Direct and work with the lead thermal technician in the design and development of thermal protection systems for use on space flight systems.

· Responsible for all aspects of thermal vacuum testing. Develop thermal models and conduct analyses in support of thermal system testing. Design and development of system and subsystem thermal test configurations. Generate test plans and specifications, participate in execution of test and perform analysis of test data. Correlate thermal analysis models based on system and subsystem test data.

· Develop thermal control engineering/prototype laboratory models as to further develop space flight technology.

· Provide program support at status meetings and reviews – formal & informal presentations and documentation.

· Participate in and/or initiate independent proposal and technology development efforts in advance thermal system development. Provide thermal engineering support of department proposal efforts as required.

· Provide thermal design support for other space system applications. 

 

Education, Skills Training, Experience:

Minimum of BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent. Minimum of 3 years experience providing end-to-end thermal engineering support of spacecraft development and total of 3-5 years of thermal engineering experience with regard to space system applications, thermal vacuum testing and multilayer insulation design. Must have demonstrated a solid basis and understanding of heat transfer theory and the use of thermal analysis software tools as applied to space based thermal designs. Must be proficient in the use of personal computers and standard software tools such as Microsoft Office.

Experience with numerical solution software SINDA/G and/or Sinda/Fluint and geometric modeling software TSS and/or TRAYSYS and/or Thermal Desktop. Experience in thermal analysis of systems using advanced materials is highly desired. Prior experience in projects related to research and development in thermal system technologies or analysis.
