Tool Engineer 4 - GMD Program Position Description Designs and modifies complex aerospace manufacturing tools and peculiar support equipment for the Ground-based Mincourse Defense program. Leads activities to develop and implements alternative methods and interim solutions for damaged and unsafe tools and equipment to meet functional requirements. Analyzes and revises preventive maintenance requirements for tools. Researches, develops and evaluates new technical approaches and tool engineering processes for applicability to programs and products. Ensures and approves safety, producibility, ergonomic factors and regulatory requirements are incorporated in designs. Investigates highly complex design engineering changes for impact to existing definition to maintain engineering configuration and initiates action. Leads investigation to ensure compliance with regulatory and contractual requirements for tool, equipment or process modifications. Mentors and trains others. Works under minimal direction. Travel to remote locations will be required. Uses time effectively and prevents irrelevant issues or distractions from interfering with work completion.Technical [ + ] Computer Aided Design Tools Ability to manipulate complex computer aided design tools and systems (e.g., computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), computer aided three dimensional interactive (CATIA), Mentor Graphics, Unigraphics). Able to build and manipulate complex data sets, (e.g., compare CATIA to measurement data, create stereo lithography files). [ + ] Engineering Drawings & Specs Extensive and specialized ability to read and understand basic and complex engineering drawings and specifications. Assists others in understanding detailed drawings and specs. [ + ] Manufacturing Methods Advanced knowledge of manufacturing, methods, fabrication processes (e.g., forming, stamping, machining, heat treatment, machines/machine tools, cutting tools and fluids, N/C programming, instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems). Ability to select the best method of producing parts, tools or assemblies. [ + ] Operations Processes Extensive and specialized knowledge of the responsibilities and tasks performed by various Operations departments/disciplines (e.g., Fabrication, Assembly, Tooling, Quality, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering). Extensive and specialized knowledge of the interactions between departments/disciplines and how their products/processes affect one another and impact non-operations processes (e.g., Engineering, Business, Logistics). [ + ] Process Management Skills Extensive and specialized ability to determine the process to be used to accomplish goals, properly document processes, know how to organize people and activities, understand how to separate and combine tasks into efficient work flow, identify opportunities for synergy and integration, and simplify complex processes. [ + ] Prod Sup and Eng Relationships Extensive, specialized knowledge of product support practices and interactions with other disciplines. Recognized as a product support expert within the company. Education and/or Experience Typically 9 to 13 years' experience in an engineering classification or either a Master's degree with 7 to 11 years' experience or a PhD degree with 4 to 8 years' experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard. Other Job related information Previous aerospace primary structure design or analysis experience. Candidate should possess good communication & integration skills to effectively function in a multidiscipline engineering environment. Experience providing support to a factory environment. Layout and Detail design experience. Strong background in using 3D CAD Solid Modeling (Proficiency in Unigraphics CAD System preferred). Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Demonstrated experience in presentation and leadership skills. Material Review Board experience. Preferred: Previous design and production experience with large mechanical structures in aerospace applications. Working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5M (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
