That's why we're here. Vac Fur & Heat Treat Op Stl A Position Description 1. Operate the vacuum furnace to heat treat, draw, temper, anneal, normalize, braze, diffusion bond and form all types of metals that are sensitive to atmospheric contamination at elevated temperatures. Prepare materials for furnace operation. Collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing Development to determine and optimize the capability of vacuum furnace. Document test sequences and procedures used in assembly and processing of parts. 2. When procedures have not been previously established or the type of steel is unidentified, determine the time, temperature, quenching medium and sequence of operations necessary to harden, case harden, carburize, draw, temper, normalize, anneal and otherwise heat treat steel. Competencies 1. Work with Research Engineers on the development of new processes and materials. 2. Derive or work to information from shop orders, blueprints, documents, specifications, advanced information, sketches, etc. 3. Operate vacuum diffusion pumps and their associated equipment. 4. Set and adjust controls for furnace heat cycle and/or furnace temperature. 5. Do routine preventative work to maintain heating elements and cleanliness of equipment. 6. Control atmosphere of furnace with the proper use of inert liquefied and atmospheric gases, i.e., helium, argon and nitrogen. 7. Coordinate certification requirements of equipment. 8. Assist and work with lower grade employees engaged in the heat treat of all types of metals. 9. Make hardness tests to determine proper heating and quenching. 10. Perform rework as required. 11. Report malfunctions of equipment to supervisors or maintenance. 12. Load, unload, quench, clean and stack material. 13. When necessary, repair and make components of existing tools, dies, jigs, etc. Education and/or Experience High School Diploma Preferred.
