Job Description:
This task is installation CAT5/6 cabling and wireless access points at the above mentioned AF base. Responsible for the accomplishment of wireless LAN installations working in a team environment. Locate and identify communications closets, power supplies, rack space, and cable trays. Work activities include the installation of cable pathways and support systems and the placing, termination, testing and labeling of cable and wire. Work methods must be in compliance with national, state and local electrical and safety codes; telecommunications industry standards; materials manufacturer specifications; and customer requirements.
Assist in preparation of site installation by reading drawings for location of access points, cable routes, coverage areas, and identifying any special equipment required to complete the installation. Perform physical installation of wireless APs, route cables through buildings, connect cables to equipment, and perform end-to-end continuity testing.
The manager is looking for candidates that have LMR 400 and LMR 600 cable experience.
Qualifications:
• Possess manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination and the ability to use small hand tools
• High school diploma and 2 years experience in the survey, installation, and documentation of communications equipment at military installations
• Prior direct experience with military communications or Civil Engineering squadrons performing base infrastructure work is a plus
• Physical condition to perform job duties including seeing/hearing; fingering/feeling/handling/reaching; bending/crouching/squatting;kneeling/pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying weights in excess of 50 pounds (heavy work); tolerance for prolonged walking or standing on various surfaces
• Ability to perceive differences in color and tone
• Tolerance for working aloft and in confined spaces
• Fundamental knowledge of job related equipment, cable testing equipment, coring and drilling.
• Able to work on ladders up to 12’ and boom/scissor lifts 60’+.
• Working knowledge of electricity, i.e., bonding, grounding and National Electric Code
• Fundamental knowledge of EIA/TIA codes 568A and 606
• Working knowledge of structured cabling concepts
• Working knowledge of CAT5E, CAT6 and Fiber installs (start to finish) including specialized test equipment and accurate record keeping
• Demonstrated effective communication skills using tact and courtesy along with the ability to handle sensitive pressure situations
• Demonstrated effective ability to work without direct supervision
• Will require work in a team atmosphere
• Candidates must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
Experience: Must have cable pulling and telecom installation background. Inside/outside plant installation experience a plus. General knowledge of routers, switches, cables, and building construction.
