INFORMATIONAssists in and learns inspection and enforcement activities related to Federal, State and local agricultural and/or weights and measures laws, regulations, ordinances and policies for consumer and agricultural industry protection.
This is the entry-level class in the Agricultural/Weights and Measures Series. Positions are characterized by responsibility for assisting in and learning to perform regulatory inspections and to enforce appropriate ordinances, laws and regulations associated with agricultural and weights and measures standards enforcement. Incumbents work under the close supervision of a journey-level inspector and must have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing and to perform mathematical calculations including algebraic functions. These positions require analytical ability sufficient to define problems of inspection or enforcement, and to develop and recommend methods for resolution of such problems. Incumbents learn techniques for the collection and analysis of data for the preparation of written reports, and use common personal computers for the preparation of reports, data entry and data retrieval. Incumbents drive departmental or personal vehicles on a regular and frequent basis, and may be required to lift and carry test equipment, agricultural products, or other objects up to 50 pounds in weight.
ESSENTIAL JOB
FUNCTIONSParticipates in a structured development training program, typically including rotations between both agricultural inspection and weights and measures inspection enforcement functions, in order to learn inspection procedures for fruits and vegetables and egg quality standards, inspections of plants and plant material for pest organisms, pesticide use enforcement, techniques for control and eradication of weeds and vertebrate pests on residential, commercial, and agricultural properties, detection and eradication of exotic pests such as foreign insects, inspections of commercial meters and scales for accuracy in markets and other commercial establishments, preparation of written reports, inspection certificates, citations or other notices of violations, uses a variety of hand-held or other equipment such as refractometer, scales, graduated measures, hydrometers and lap top computers, and uses a variety of mathematical formulae, including algebra, trigonometry, and statistics. Appointee may be required to drive their own his/her automobile or the ability to utilize an alternate method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with specialization in agricultural or biological sciences or other appropriate disciplines, as determined by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Successful completion of a college or university level course in Botany or Entomology is required within one year from time of appointment.Physical Class: 3 - Moderate:
Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Licenses: A valid State of California Weights and Measures License in either Weight Verification or Measurement Verification - AND - A valid agricultural license in Pest Prevention and Plant Regulation shall be obtained within one year from time of appointment.
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.
Special Requirement Information: Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national, or international accrediting agencies which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.
License Information: Applicants for this examination MUST attach a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to their application.
Driving Records may be obtained from any DMV office. An application without a copy of Driving Record will be rejected. Applicants whose driving records do not meet the County standards will not be eligible to compete in this examination. If the record shows four (4) or more moving violations within the past two years, the applicant will be disqualified. License must not be revoked or suspended. Appointees may be required to provide automobiles and drive them in the County service at the rate of compensation allowed by the Board of Supervisors.
Withhold: Applicants expecting to graduate within six months of filing for this examination from an accredited four-year college with specialization in the agricultural or biological sciences or other appropriate disciplines as determined by the California Department of Food and Agriculture are encouraged to apply for this exam. CONTENTThis examination will consist of a qualifying written test and an interview weighted 100%. The written test will cover reading comprehension,* reasoning and written expression.* The interview will cover training, experience and general ability to perform the duties of the position.
