This position supports our facility at Rochester Washington that is part of our multi-facility Western Regeneration business with three decades of experience serving Company and external customers with top-quality reforestation, Christmas tree and ornamental seed and seedlings. Background: The position reports to the Facility Manager. The position is responsible for leading the growing, production and delivery of consistently high-quality and cost-competitive container seedlings, and for the aggressive development and implementation of technology and reliable processes to improve quality, consistency and cost of container growing, as part of a close-knit facility and cross-business team with a strong safety, teamwork and customer service focus. Key functions: Develop and ensure error-free implementation of reliable & cost-effective growing processes for a range of container crops. Be a hands-on, working grower with a high day-to-day involvement in growing and production activities. This position involves organization and supervision of production operations relating to seasonal contract crews with a strong emphasis on safety, productivity and quality. This includes crop tracking, trouble-shooting & diagnosis of unknown health or damage problems, development/testing of improved methods and equipment to solve problems, improve cost and maximize value delivery, and keeping management informed on crop and production activity status. This person is expected to keep the facility up to date on improvements in container growing techniques through regular participation in professional meetings and benchmarking of other operations, and will actively partner with R&D and with our other nursery teams on improvement trials. Will also be expected to lead or assist facility manager in a range of site, safety, budget and cost tracking and facility and equipment maintenance activities. Must be willing to lead by example, particularly regarding safety and professional job behavior, integrity, fairness and positive work attitude. In addition to safety leadership and crew supervision, the primary growing responsibilities are: planning sowing and cultural regimes for various species and stock types monitoring crop development making appropriate changes necessary for production of healthy seedlings with growth and conditioning required to meet customer specific specifications monitoring for disease or other problems and make recommendations to correct them, including pesticide applications supervising and working closely with a team of up to 5 growers on day to day growing activities within high standards of safety, efficiency and quality supervising and maintaining high safety, quality and production standards by contract crews performing growing and production work coordinating and evaluating trials of new products to improve stock quality and cost maintaining detailed records including fertilizer and pesticide applications, growth records, sowing and packing records and chemical inventories/MSDS maintaining on-hand inventory of all supplies needed for growing the cropoperating and troubleshooting environmental, growing, and production equipment BS degree in Forestry, Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture or related fields. Six or more years of related industry experience Proven commitment and ability to successfully supervise crews to meet challenging safety, cost and quality targets in a stressful production environment with tight production deadlines. This must include a willingness to work long hours and weekends where needed, sometimes under unpleasant weather conditions, to get the job done. Strong working knowledge of seedling biology/physiology, pathology, and key biological leverage points in container seedling production, and an orientation to continuously seek out and test improved methods . Good working knowledge of nursery equipment, operation and maintenance. Strong familiarity with chemicals and their use/effects, must get a pesticide applicators license. Must have a genuine interest in personal development and be flexible regarding work hours. Able to plan and manage complex projects to successful completion with minimal or no supervision. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work well with others. Strong value systems and ethics demonstrated in fair treatment of all employees.
