Library Manager

The Sanborn Map Company, Inc. is in search of a library manager.  In this role, you will work onsite in the USDA’s Remote Sensing Lab (RSL).  The lab produces data for a survey for the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service NRI (Natural Resources Inventory).

 

 The Library Manager is part of the RSL management team and is responsible for the quality of all products and services performed by the library team, managing production schedules to meet client delivery expectations, and providing weekly progress reports.  This position recommends process improvements and leads the conversion of the RSL analog library into a digital library using state-of-the-art library science ensuring appropriate handling, filing, distribution, and safe-guarding of all library source materials, including inventorying of materials. 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

· Provides direction to library staff and helps direct activities of the Decision Support Team.

· Develops recommendations and draft requirements for disposition, organization, and retention of library source materials and records.

· Evaluates digital library concepts and applications and makes recommendations for the establishment of the RSL digital library.

· Develops expertise in the application of RFID technology.  Creates standard spreadsheets and databases to track team information. 

· Directs activities and resources to provide quality and timeliness in the delivery of products and services.  Provides direction to project team including assignments of individual responsibilities, tasks, and technical functions.

· Provides technical support to library team; serves as the first line of technical assistance before a concern is elevated to an NRCS Technical Specialist (Decision Support Lead).

·  Leads and conducts team-area QC activities and documents findings. Makes and/or directs appropriate corrections.

· Coordinates with other RSL Library staff to implement nationally consistent QC and training plans.

· Participates in meetings and provides updates and information, as requested.

· Provides suggestions and recommendations as to hiring, firing, advancement, promotion or other change of status of employees. 

· Assists in employment decisions (interview process, hiring decision, performance reviews, promotions, etc.).

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The RSL Library position role has direct supervisory responsibility; this position will provide management and direction to library staff as well as additional staff that may be assigned to the Decision Support Team.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s degree.  Highly preferred is a MLS (Master’s of Library Science).

 

Three years or more of professional experience managing analog and/or digital records and materials.  Specific experience in records management, library/information science and/or archival science is required.  Demonstrated success in managing the overall coordination of work assignments for employees and/or teams.  Experience with analog and digital filing systems (e.g. medical, legal, business) and radio-frequency identification (RFID) applications in records and materials management is preferred.
