Massachusetts Ocean Governance Position*

Location: Boston, Mass.



*This is an 8 month contract position, with extension possible.



This position has primary responsibility for coordinating and managing Ocean Conservancy’s programmatic activities to implement Massachusetts ocean governance reforms and to advance Ocean Conservancy’s Strategic Plan Goal to reform government for better ocean stewardship in the New England region. 


CONTRACTUAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinates and manages Ocean Conservancy’s Massachusetts programmatic activities related to ocean governance, providing leadership and support for Ocean Conservancy program staff in the development and implementation of programmatic, constituency building, administrative legislative strategies to achieve programmatic ocean governance goals. Serves as Ocean Conservancy’s lead representative with Massachusetts stakeholders, agency, administration and legislative leader on ocean governance issues, communicating, in writing and orally, Ocean Conservancy’s positions on ocean governance and related policy matters. Works to build coalitions to secure passage of legislation and monitor implementation of ocean governance policies in Massachusetts. Monitors the day-to-day status of Massachusetts initiatives affecting ocean governance issues and informs Ocean Conservancy program staff of pending initiatives, policies, hearings or other opportunities to advance ocean governance and related ocean policy. Educates and mobilizes Massachusetts constituents to act on behalf of the ocean governance reforms including email action alerts, attendance at hearings, editorials, letters, and petitions · Leads effort to organize, expand and manage Massachusetts coalitions to advocate and implement ocean governance programs, maintaining a cooperative relationship with government agencies, industry groups, scientific and academic communities and other conservation groups.

 

CONTRACTUAL QUALIFICATIONS:



Five or more years of experience working with state and federal environmental legislation, preferably including marine conservation legislation.  Advanced degree in political science, environmental law, environmental science, or environmental policy required.  Outstanding writing, organization, and interpersonal communications skills are essential. Proven experience with developing and enacting federal environmental legislation, and a demonstrated commitment to conservation of the oceans and marine wildlife.
