Stable Worker

General Statement of Work

Under direction of the Stable Supervisor, performs duties to effectively operate an equestrian stable, including feeding and grooming of horses, care of tack, cleaning stalls, and preparation of horses and ponies for riding lessons, lead line, and pony parties.

 
Location:  Lord Stirling Stable, Basking Ridge NJ
 

DutiesFeed horses grain, supplements and hay.Groom horses, inspecting for wounds; pull manes and trim horses’ polls, fetlocks, and whiskers.Care for tack (bits, bridles, girths, stirrup leathers, saddles, stirrup pads, and reins) and ensure all is in good repair.  Tack horses.  Clean tack and make minor repairs as necessary.
Clean and bed stalls; prepare empty bags for recycling.Ensure horses have clean water.  Clean and fill water troughs.  Clean automatic waterers and buckets.Prepare horses for lessons, public riders (hacking), special events, and pony parties and present horses to the riders.  Ensure that rules and qualifications are followed.Administer wormer, I.M. injections and medications to horses as needed.  Must be able to identify various horse illnesses and injuries, and treat accordingly.  Call vet, if instructed by Manager or Supervisor.Launder saddle pads, blankets, and girths as needed.Lift hay bales weighing up to 75 pounds.Handle horses in a safe and quiet manner.Ride new horses until they are utilized in the riding program.  Assist with re-schooling horses as needed.Drive vehicles and farm machinery as needed.Assist Maintenance staff as requested with tasks such as painting the indoor ring kickboards.Responsible for security of stable equipment, supplies, and buildings.  Is familiar with alarm system and ventilation system.Assist vet and farrier as needed.Prepare lessons plans for the two week summer workshop; teach two days of each workshop.  Similarly, prepare plans for the five week workshops, four times annually.Provide pony rides during the pony parties.Present a positive image as a Park Commission representative to all facility users and the public.

 
Qualifications

Ability to perform simple maintenance tasks. Ability to adjust work schedule to include some evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required for the proper care of the horses.  Ability to perform physical tasks under varying weather conditions. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Ability to work with the general public crucial.  Must have a valid driver's license.  Previous experience working with horses preferred.
