TITLE: PLUMBING ENGINEER

REPORTS TO: SENIOR ENGINEERING STAFF / PRODUCTION MANAGER

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Take the primary role in the development of construction drawings and specifications, whose purpose is to provide  Plumbing and Fire Protection systems design for new construction (or renovation) of commercial (or industrial) structures as requested by the client. These documents address the installation, interconnection and control of plumbing/fire protection systems that comply with standard codes.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

1.  Possess / demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of design and documentation of each of the following Mechanical Sub-systems (with emphasis on PLUMBING and FIRE PROTECTION):

· Plumbing equipment and distribution systems (Domestic water piping, sanitary waste/vent, storm, house pumps, water heaters, etc.)

· Fire protection equipment and distribution systems (Sprinkler and standpipe mains / branches, fire and jockey pumps, etc.)

· HVAC equipment and distribution systems (Ductwork, heating and chilled water piping, air units, boilers, chillers, etc.)

· Mechanical equipment controls systems (DDC systems controlling pumps, air units, boilers, chillers, etc.)

 

Note: Breadth / depth of knowledge of the above will be a determining overall value delivered.

2.  Possess / demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of work efforts required by the Electrical Trade.

3.  Possess / demonstrate extensive working knowledge of work efforts required by other Project-related trades (Architectural, Structural, Civil, etc.).

4.  Possess / demonstrate ability to accurately produce  documents depicting these systems using AutoCAD, while strictly following in-house CAD standards.

5.  Possess / demonstrate the ability to accurately produce (in an organized and easily readable fashion) the required calculations, and assemble and organize such into the Project Manual.

6.  Possess / demonstrate the ability and desire to self-train (outside of office hours) to advance in areas needing improvement...

7.  Possess / demonstrate the ability and desire to participate independently in Client contact (Attending of meetings, accomplishing both oral and written communications, etc.)

8.  Possess / demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of state and local codes.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

Leadership level participation in (i.e., know, practice, and teach the process of, and carry out or delegate various tasks related to) the following:

1.  Establishing of project scope, plumbing budget, and necessary constraints and design approach relative to project manager / client requirements.

2.  Preparing of feasibility studies and cost estimates.

3.  Conducting of field measuring and checking at the construction site.

4.  Conducting of code reviews.

5.  Review of documents for accuracy, completeness, and code compliance with standards and codes.

6.  Preparation of specifications, using in-office word processing software.

7.  Review of product submittals (shop drawings) for design content, determination of action to be taken to reach specification compliance.

8.  Using in-office software, preparation of project file updates, transmittals, letters, reports, requests for reproduction services, etc.

9.  Coordinating mechanical trade efforts with other disciplines.

10.  Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1.  Occasional climbing, lifting, carrying, and/or crawling required.

2.  While performing duties of this job, employee occasionally will work in outside weather conditions.

EDUCATION:

B.S.M.E. and Registration preferred.

CPD - Certified in Plumbing Design

EXPERIENCE:

1.  10 + years or more related and progressively more responsible experience in plumbing engineering/construction field.

2.  Advanced working knowledge in AutoCAD required.

3.  Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel software applications.
