Hardware Engineering Manager

SUMMARY This position involves leading a staff of 5-10 hardware engineers, mechanical engineers, draftsman, PCB layout technicians and lab technicians. This team is responsible for developing and supporting high technology diagnostic products to the transportation industry. Development of quality products to challenging schedules is required while improving process maturity and developing the potential of staff members. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS) 1. Staff management· Establish and maintain staff technical capabilities· Provide mid-year and end-of-year employee evaluations· Provide mentoring as the senior technical engineer within the department 2. Project / Program Management· Provide project leadership on complex projects that require senior engineer leadership· Manage resources to ensure projects are appropriately staffed· Work with marketing/sales in project definition, project feasibility, estimate, and timeline 3. Technology· Keep abreast of emerging technologies.· Assess present tools and development processes, and pro-actively drive change where efficiencies can be gained.· Implement product development strategies to coincide with long range business plan  EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE · BSEE with 10+ years of experience· Past experience supervising an engineering team· Design experience including both digital and analog technologies· Field Program Gate Arrays (FPGA) and Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLD) design experience with VHDL - Desired· Experienced in writing hardware requirements and specification documents· Experienced in designing cost effective products· Experienced in designing embedded microprocessors/microcontroller based products· Ability to solve problems that are undefined and involve multiple technologies· Ability to train and coach others · Ability to analyze equipment, designs, tooling, materials, and processes to minimize costs and improve profitability.· Ability to act as an organizational change agent by actively benchmarking industry leaders and proposing methods to improve and streamline processes· Proven ability to set the technical direction on development projects· Proven ability to be the engineering representative on multi-functional project teams, providing the engineering schedule, status and deliverables to the operations disciplines.· Proven ability to provide unique solutions when solving engineering technical problems involving embedded systems, digital circuitry, analog circuitry, and FPGA’s.· Proven ability to lead engineering design teams on complex projects that involve electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, technicians, drafters, software engineers, and application test engineers.
