Product Engineer / Manufacturing Engineer / Process Engineer
For over 50 years, Veridiam (www.veridiam.com), a major integrated metal product contract manufacturer, has provided custom engineered, build-to-print tubing and metal components for nuclear power, aerospace, medical, industrial and other highly-critical applications. Our precision tubing and metal working capabilities are housed in three San Diego, California area locations (El Cajon, Oceanside and Poway) and a manufacturing facility in Costa Rica. This position is based in El Cajon.Veridiam offers its customers a wide variety of fabrication options and custom engineered products to meet almost any design challenge.
We are a growing mid-size manufacturing company with 500 employees and a track record of stability and success. Due to our continued growth, we have a need for two Engineers to join the Veridiam team. These positions are a great opportunity for experienced product/manufacturing/process engineers to lead, plan and coordinate the manufacturing launch of new/revised products by determining materials, methods, processes, schedules, and procedures. You will work closely with production, sales, and quality departments on new products (80% of time) and re-engineered products (20% of time). These positions report directly to the Director of Engineering.
Primary Responsibilities
1. In response to customer quote requests from Sales, research, design and develop manufacturing processes including materials, production flow, assembly methods, machining, and production equipment capabilities. Prepare an assessment and estimate of product costs.
2. For assigned products, manage product development planning, including:
· Developing manufacturing, implementation and process control plan
· Identifying, documenting and ordering material, tooling and equipment necessary to support specific jobs and processes
· Recommending new equipment or outsourcing when justified by quality and/or cost benefit
· Documenting new process procedures, including process standards
· Performing FMEA as required
· Coordinating with customer technical representative
3. Prepare manufacturing schedules, manufacturing instructions and procedures, status reports, requests for nonconforming product acceptance, revisions to drawings, specifications and contracts.
4. Develop qualified vendors for procured items. Determine technical requirements and initiate purchase orders for raw materials, manufactured sub-components and services.
5. Review and evaluate in process and final cost reports on assigned projects. Advise departments, as necessary, for cost control. Develop methods to meet cost targets prior to hand-off to production. Using tools and systems, track and update actual costs against estimate.
6. Work with production supervisors, product engineers and quality engineers to systematically ensure product quality through process control methods.
7. Serve as a resource, provide expert technical assistance, and deliver on-the-job training to production employees and production supervisors, to ensure all work is performed per specifications in an expeditious, complete, cost effective and safe manner.
8. Utilize an understanding of current and potential process capabilities and process control limits. Implement statistical process control (SPC) where appropriate. Provide on-the-job SPC training to production employees. Be actively involved in lean manufacturing, process improvement goal setting, and process control activities based on cost, quality and delivery needs.
Qualifications & Skill Requirements:
· BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field of engineering.
· Five (5) or more years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in the metal fabrication industry. Experience specifically related to innovation and problem solving pertaining to materials, machining, heat treating, cleaning, forming, drawing, deburring, grinding, rolling and/or welding metals is a plus. Some tool design experience is a plus but not required. Experience as a manufacturing engineer, reliability engineer, or as a engineering team member/analyst involved in product design is highly transferable experience.
· Working knowledge of manufacturing techniques and process development. Ability to prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates in response to RFQs from our OEM customers for build-to-print products.
· Experience analyzing process capability and developing and implementing product development plans and process improvement plans and schedules.
· Knowledge of Statistical Process Control, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and Lean tools. Experience implementing lean principles in manufacturing and transactional processes, and ensuring quality systems and standards in all processes and activities.
· Knowledge of purchasing, supplier qualification, and vendor/supplier management.
· Strong interpersonal, facilitation, verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
· Strong project management and task management skills that include the ability to plan, prioritize, organize, gather facts, prepare schedules, document procedures and processes, and exercise sound judgment in decision making.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and interfaces with employees at all levels of the organization, customers, and vendors.
· Must be bright, resourceful and solutions oriented. Must be able to work effectively, both independently and as a member of a team.
· Ability to operate a computer workstation and related software (MS Word, Excel). Experience with MS Project, SolidWorks, and SPC software is a plus but not required.
· Ability to train and instruct others. Ability to provide and accept feedback, input and constructive criticism.
