Hydro Automotive Structures, located in Holland, Michigan is a wholly owned subsidiary of Norsk Hydro, producing aluminum extruded automotive components for the auto industry.  We are currently seeking to fill the position of Welding Engineer.

 

Welding Engineer

Summary -

Plans, directs, and coordinates welding manufacturing processes in industrial plant by performing the following duties.  Participates in project team meetings to develop design of product and definition of a process to support that design (Active input necessary).

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Supports production welding operations with respect to weld quality and equipment uptime.

 

Works with engineering and development to develop products and corresponding processes.  Quotes those processes for optimal throughput with respect to capital investments.

 

Works with customers to develop welding specifications, weld process standards, and to validate welding processes.

 

Responsible for weld quality on plant equipment. 

 

Develops, evaluates, and improves manufacturing methods in accordance with TS16949 requirements.

 

Analyzes and plans work force utilization, space requirements, and workflow, and designs layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency.

 

Confers with planning and design staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods.

 

Confers with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards.

 

Estimates production times, staffing requirements, and related costs to provide information for management decisions.

 

Confers with management, engineering, and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes.

 

Applies statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential.

               

Develop PFMEA and participate in team meetings to assure that mistake proofing is optimized for each process.

 

Source equipment, tooling and processes to support various prototype and production requirements required by project. Activity must be timely and support planned economics and resources. Product of the activity must yield a safe and robust quality product. Responsible for maintaining a timeline that assures compliance with the overall project timing.

 

Develop and maintain a layout of the work area of responsibility that represents the total needs of the operation including auxiliary support and material handling equipment.

 

Follow up and oversee qualifying runs to assure that timing safety and quality agreements are in compliance.

 

Create work instructions to accomplish safety, operation and maintenance of equipment tooling and processes are done in correct and systematic manner.

 

Train operational personnel, (maintenance, operators, and technicians) in the use of the equipment, tools and processes in compliance with the work instruction documentation.

 

Support the launch and early stages of production including iterative improvements in the process and programs to assure that production schedules can be met with quality product.

 

Adheres to TS16949 and ISO14001 policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications:  BS in Manufacturing or Welding Engineering.  Extensive experience with aluminum welding, as well as robot programming and PLCs.  A minimum of 5 years of experience is required.
