Patch Management Specialist

Position Summary:

Support IT patch management, a systematic approach for patch updates in an IT organization.  Identifies and ensures patches for critical systems are identified, documented for vendor severity, evaluated for relevancy, and analyzed for impact risk and probability.  Responsible for following the patch process through implementation of selected patches through change management.  Required to act as functional technician for managing certain high profile/sensitive equipment, and may be required to physically implement patch updates on these systems.

Essential Job Duties:

· Proactively reviews and analyzes vendor patch release notifications.

· Acts as patch management technician or engineer; ensures compliance after reviewing patch notifications for relevance categorizes and records dispositions with appropriate subject matter experts, and conducts appropriate reviews on systems not under his/her direct management.

· Documents, reviews and analyzes relevant patches on a consistent basis or oversees that this is being done by the appropriate groups.

· Meets with designated teams as required, determining patch disposition.

· Moves all patches through the Change Management process giving approval that appropriate documentation including test plans have been filed with the requests.

· Ensures systems are monitored and issues related to patching are followed up and resolved. 

· Ensures that all patches are deployed as required, and all approvals received.  Deploys patches on designated equipment.

· Monitors compliance by platform teams to patch management process.  Reviews patch dispositions for timeliness and process compliance.

· Reviews and documents issues and resolutions with the patch process.

· Conducts quarterly and yearly patch management audits with IT director, documents quarterly and yearly patch management audits and manages auditing queue in Footprints for completion of tasks.

· Ensures review/recording of syslog compliance weekly with regards to security and network events.

· Work with Platform teams to help maintain and build asset dbs.

· Consults with application groups to improve the patch management process and procedures.

· Works with other groups to resolve security challenges. Researches and assists in developing new security techniques.

· Troubleshoots incidents, establishes and/or validates root cause analysis.  Works with application groups to establish short term, long term and permanent fixes.

· Establishes meetings with application groups and provides necessary training classes ensuring they understand their patching commitment.

· Exercises considerable judgment in meeting business requirements/adhering to security standards.

· Able to perform complex decision-making in addressing patch management decisions and methodology.

· Able to make tough decisions on a very short time schedule. Must be prepared to offer solutions and suggestions that can be reviewed by the team leads and manage

· Analyzes security issues to determine the best method for resolution when an update doesn’t function properly in the Regulus environment. Documents the decision and can defend the position.

· Analyzes and recommends automation and process improvement strategies regarding patch management, security vulnerabilities, vendor management and internal audit best practices.

· Keeps abreast of vendor software pipelines to ensure tactical and strategic alignment of installed software within Regulus’ UNIX and Windows operation system environment.

· Work is organized and accomplished without considerable or consistent direction from lead.

 

Minimum Requirements:

· 5 years’ experience working within a Microsoft Windows environment; 5 years’ experience working within a Unix environment.

· Working knowledge of patch alerting systems. Understands reporting tools such as ePO logs and WSUS reports.

· Working knowledge of basic Windows server and desktop support.

· Internal audit and/or security background

· Software change management experience is desired.

· Must have strong communication and organization skills.

· Effective written and verbal communication skills that blend technical concepts with business language depending on audience and situation

· Ability to use experience and judgment to plan and accomplish new and/or unfamiliar objectives

· Ability to research, gather and analyze information then formulate effective recommendations/actions.

· Ability to effectively interpret and act upon a variety of instructions from various channels

· Ability to work independently and with a team to produce accurate results in a fast-paced environment

· Ability to prioritize and multi-task.

· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
