SUMMARY
With minimum supervision the Commercial Underwriter provides support to the Corporate Relationship Managers and Regional Sales Managers with financial analysis, loan structure, risk rating, and pricing for complex new credits and complex renewals of existing borrowers. Prepares a full Credit Authorization Memorandum and makes recommendation for approval or decline based upon the financial analysis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIESRESPONSIBILITIESResponsible for analyzing, structuring, and preparing credit recommendations for new and renewed complex credit transactions for all types of credit facilities and industries. May review and critique the sections underwritten by a junior analyst. Responsible for reviewing each Commercial Credit Request for completeness and providing questions to the account officer that need to be addressed in the credit approval memorandum to clarify financial trends changes in management, the company or its operations. Makes joint calls with the account officers to the borrower’s place of business to observe the company’s operations and actively participates in discussions with the company’s management. Obtains a through understanding of the business, financial trends, and issues that may impact the ongoing business operations. Identify all financial covenant violations, policy exceptions, negative, or positive trends that could affect debt repayment, or the continued operation of the business. Prepares or reviews the Risk Rating Worksheet and Loan Profitability Worksheet for accuracy. Provide statement analysis to examine liquidity, leverage, and cash flow in the past, present, and future and use ratios, trends and industry analysis as tools for arriving at conclusions. Design appropriate covenants based on the type of loan, the amount of the loan, and the credit risk to the Bank. Covenants should comply with loan policy or have an appropriate mitigate. Demonstrates a through understanding of Bank Loan Policy and Procedures for all types of commercial loan requests. If required has the skills and knowledge to underwrite any type of loan request including product, or purpose specific credits such as Fast Track, Fast Lease, Business Overdraft Line of Credit, Account Receivable Lines of Credit, Warehouse Lines to leasing company’s, or lines leasing company’s based on availability of the future stream of payments, lines to a business to rehab a single family residence, or equipment flooring lines. On occasion may handle processing duties including asset, loan and deposit verification, personal and business credit checks, title searches, Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) filing searches, West Law personal and business searches, file assembly, and other essential tasks to develop a complete credit approval memorandum. Provide the junior analyst with positive feedback and critique regarding the analytical work they contributed to the credit approval memorandum. Presents credits to the Managing Loan Committee and LOARC. Conducts credit training sessions for the Underwriting Group, Branch Managers, Relationship, and Sales Managers. Demonstrated ability to perform breakeven analysis, detailed financial projections based on a discussion with the borrower’s management, support assumptions used in projections, and demonstrate the ability to calculate the size credit line needed to support the company’s operations based on projections.
OTHER DUTIES
Supports the principles of community banking through cross selling and referral to appropriate departments for specialized services. The preceding tasks have been provided as examples of the type of work performed by positions in this class. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, and rescind work assignments as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES -(minimum qualifications)
1. Satisfactory completion of a first year college-level general accounting course or equivalent banking-related course and/or a demonstrated understanding of the business financial statement including the balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows.
2. Proficient with computers/standard business software packages including Microsoft Word, Excel and the Metavante accounting program to gather borrower’s loan and deposit history.
3. Proficient using automated spreading system for tax returns/personal financial statements.
4. Proficient in the use of online programs to order and process credit checks, personal and business back ground checks, and UCC searches.
5. The ability to perform work at a pace appropriate to a given workload
