Invitrogen is seeking an analytical chemist for our nanoscience R&D team.JOB PURPOSEThe purpose of this position is to support research on novel fluorescent nanocrystals (quantum dots) through development and utilization of analytical methodologies for thorough characterization of nanomaterials.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES• Independently perform characterization and testing of novel organic/inorganic composite nanomaterials for use in new and existing research, biomedical and biotechnological applications. Adapt, develop and document new analytical methodologies as required.• Interface with outside contract laboratories, coordinate sample shipment, sample analyses, and subsequently compile data obtained for analyses performed for assigned materials and products.• Identify, establish, and develop key collaborations with outside research laboratories as required. Establish collaborative agreement, coordinate instrument usage, and compile data obtained into concise report of results.• Impact business opportunities through successful completion of R&D tasks, new project and program proposals, and contributions toward improvement of existing products and processes.EDUCATION & PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE REQUIRED• Experience acquired through achievement of an advanced degree in analytical chemistry or related scientific discipline and/or through relevant industrial R&D experience in analytical chemistry. Ideal applicants will have a Ph.D. degree or M.S. degree plus four or more years industrial R&D experience or B.S. degree plus eight or more years industrial R&D experience.• Requires highly creative scientist with in-depth knowledge of the theories, practices and procedures of analytical chemistry as are typically obtained through an advanced degree in chemistry or a closely related field of science. • Requires extensive hands-on experience with different analytical instrumentation (e.g., NMR, FT-IR, atomic absorption, powder X-ray diffraction, high performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, UV/VIS, fluorescence spectroscopy). • Familiarity with microanalysis, surface analysis, and electron microscopy instrumentation beneficial but not required. • Previous experience in nanoparticle-related chemistry also beneficial but not required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES• The ability to modify and adapt existing techniques and the creativity to develop new analytical methods as needed to solve unusual analytical challenges.• The ability to set up a research plan, conduct the necessary experimental work, report and publish results, which may lead to the completion of new products. The ability to make detailed observations, independently analyze data, and interpret results; design and conduct well-controlled experiments; devise protocols for routine use; advise supervisor on needed materials and equipment; and to suggest protocol improvements. • The ability to repair, troubleshoot, and maintain a variety of analytical instrumentation as needed.• Enthusiastic and motivated collaborator with strong interpersonal communication skills capable of forging new partnerships.• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interpret and summarize scientific results in a clear, concise and accurate manner and the ability to prepare written technical summaries and maintain a detailed, accurate laboratory notebook.• Strong organizational skills with the ability to efficiently evaluate prioritize and handle multiple and changing priorities and projects. Ability to work under pressure with strict attention to deadlines and details.This position does not offer relocation.
