Applications Scientist

Essential Functions:The Applications Scientist, NAPQ, CPE is responsible for supporting the ongoing and new product, application development and customer support programs at Invitrogen in the nucleic acid purification and quantification business for products and applications requiring or benefiting from protocol optimization on automation platforms. This position will lead, initiate, direct, execute, and drive scientific research and/or strategies through the research/product development process, in individual studies, and in close cooperation with the commercial sales force and external customers. Responsibilities will include independently designing and executing development and optimization experiments involving different purification chemistries from diverse sample types, analyte classes, purification formats on a broad range of automation instruments. The candidate will be able to critically analyze and interpret complex data, draw conclusions and apply experimental results to meet project objectives to a timeline. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in new product development programs, gain exposure to marketing, sales and business development processes, and apply previous experience with cross-functional teams and with customers.Educational Requirements: Advance degree in engineering or life science with at least 6 years research and development and/or field/customer experience developing and optimizing protocols and supporting automation solutions.Requirements: Extensive experience with liquid handling automation platforms and nucleic acid purification technologies/chemistries as a field or technical specialist. Hands on knowledge and experience with protocol development and instrument programming/optimization is required. Field application and extensive customer interaction experience is required. Demonstrated ability and desire to apply creativity and technical acumen to develop new and better automation solutions is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have broad knowledge of and experience in developing automation nucleic acid purification chemistries on Tecan, Beckman, Perkin Elmer and Qiagen platforms. Familiarity with other automation platforms and customer workflow/applications involving nucleic acid purification highly desired. Proven ability to quickly learn, digest and apply large amounts of new, complex technical information required. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and written. Excellent analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills required. Ability to manage multiple priorities required.
