Centocor, Inc. develops innovative biomedicines. The world leader in monoclonal antibody production and technology, Centocor has brought critical biologic therapies to patients suffering from debilitating immune disorders. The position involves playing a leadership role within Oncology research and also supports the administrative management and the development of strategic direction for the group. The candidate will be responsible managing the identification and characterization of antibody-based and other biologic cancer therapeutics. The candidate will monitor and evaluate completion of tasks and projects; and participate with other top managers in establishing and meeting company objectives. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for initiating and managing a variety of external collaborative research investigations to characterize potential products. The position also involves the evaluation of in-license opportunities related to oncology. As appropriate, the candidate will build relationships with counterparts in other J&J operating companies and coordinate cross-company collaborations and also advance Centocor's reputation as a center for scientific excellence through full participation in the scientific community. Specific areas of investigation include, but are not limited to, immunomodulation of tumor growth, the role of cytokines in cancer biology, mechanisms mediating angiogenesis, and novel target identification. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D., at least 8 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry, and a demonstrated record of accomplishment in oncology biologics research.The key responsibility of the Associate Director of Oncology Research include: designing, executing, and managing in vitro and in vivo experiments to characterize potential oncology products; supervising and managing the activities of members of the junior level scientific staff in the execution of complex laboratory activities; interpreting experimental data and maintaining detailed records of experimental observations in standard laboratory notebooks; preparing written protocols and communicating results in technical reports and technical memos; presenting data in abstract or oral presentation form at National and International meetings; preparing and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals; initiating and maintaining collaborations with outside investigators, strong organizational skills needed to coordinate and integrate these activities; actively collaborating with scientists from other J&J operating companies; maintaining awareness of recent developments within project-related fields and staying current with relevant scientific literature. Other responsibilities of the Associate Director include: contributing to the creation and implementation of innovative products, processes, and technologies; participating in team environment; Being a strong leader and writing sections of Regulatory documents.This is not an exhaustive, comprehensive listing of job functions. PRINCIPAL RELATIONSHIPS Contacts Inside the Company will include scientists in Biopharmaceutical and Biology Research as well as project management, regulatory, and clinical research. Contacts Outside the Company will include scientists at other J&J operating companies, contract research organizations, and external collaborators. A PhD with at least 8 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry, and a demonstrated record of accomplishment in oncology biologics research is required. Candidate must have experience supervising PhD level scientists. Tumor biology, tumor immunology, imaging, and biomarker experience is highly desired. Experience leading cross-functional teams is preferred. Strong communication and writing skills are required.
