Associate Scientist IIILocation: Carlsbad, CAPosition Objective The Associate Scientist role is a technical contributor for the Transplant Diagnostics group. As a critical technical contributor to this Product development team, the role will plan, carry out and report on research and development activities centered on transplant screening, analysis and monitoring. Apply laboratory techniques and skills to assist in experimental planning and design in the support of new product development. Conduct experiments designed to address a variety of specific problems. Make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results. Identify and solve problems in experimental designs. Prepare technical summaries, product transfer documents, protocols and protocols for internal use and collaborate on papers for external use.Essential FunctionsIndependently conduct scientific or engineering experiments (may be complex) using laboratory equipment and calculations. Troubleshoot experiments; identify and solve problems in experimental designs. Understand and support New Product Introduction by impacting business opportunities through successful completion of tasks and projects and through suggestions for improvement in products and processes..Assist in the planning and design of well-controlled experiments. Design basic experimental protocols for routine use and suggest improvements. Ensure availability of materials and equipment to carry out experiments. Make detailed observations, independently analyze data, and interpret results. Maintains accurate lab notebook & training file in accordance with Division standard. Advise supervisor of factors that may affect quality, accuracy and usefulness of data. Suggest options for additional experimentsCollaborate on technical papers for external publications.Contribute ideas and suggestions to improve standard laboratory techniques, improve protocols, processes and equipment.Read literature directly associated with assigned project and related areas. Maintain some familiarity with current scientific literature and competitive products. Participate on project and troubleshooting teams. Comply with all company safety regulations and procedures. Report non-compliance and may serve as team lead.May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.Nature and Scope Position exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Performs duties independently with only general direction given. Understands the importance of project toward Company’s objectives. Technical ExcellenceKnows and effectively uses the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization; continues development of technical expertise through experience and application.EducationRequires a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or other related discipline, or the equivalent knowledge and experience. Masters degree in a specific scientific discipline is desired. ExperienceRequires a minimum of 6 years laboratory experience in a work environment with a Bachelor’s Degree. Knowledge of transplant immunology or histocompatibility testing will be an asset. Limited data exchange with external collaborators. Contacts are usually made on own initiative concerning matters requiring explanation, discussion, interpretation or approvals.Working ConditionsWorks in a laboratory environment. Is required to lift up to 40 lbs. May be required to stand for long periods of time while performing duties. Must be able to work safely with chemicals and hazardous materials. Must be able to work overtime and flexible shifts.
