The Bioinformatics Applications Analyst (Tier 2) supports software developers and scientists involved in the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG) project; facilitates the submission and evaluation of UML models in support of semantic integration, standards compliance, and grid-enabling activities; develops training and documentation aimed at assisting developers and model owners in achieving their bioinformatics initiatives.
Responsibilities:
· Provide advanced support and training to users, software developers, and system administrators for custom applications developed for/by Government contract or predecessors
· Troubleshoot advanced scientific and data management questions related to core applications as well as advanced system configuration and administration questions
· Evaluate UML model packages submitted by developers; register the models in metadata repository; and work with software developers and model owners to troubleshoot semantic integration and application issues
· Assist developers with adding applications and models to a cancer community grid
· Develop training materials, job aids, and other types of presentations and documentation
· Create sample code, examples, and documentation as required for individual users/developers and general training use
· Participate in system configuration management and legacy systems migrations
· May assist bioinformatics developers in expanding/enhancing research studies and conducting independent research and development experiments using NCICB applications and tools
Qualifications:
· A Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related field is required. A Master’s degree or a Doctorate degree is preferred.
· 5+ years experience in software development and implementation required
· Knowledge of standard software applications for PCs, Macs, and UNIX systems and development platforms such as Apache, Tomcat, and JBOSS
· Experience with grid technologies, such as the Globus Toolkit, strongly preferred
· Demonstrated programming skills with solid object-oriented programming (Java, UML) and web development experience
· Significant knowledge/ interest in cancer models, controlled vocabularies, semantic interoperability, genetics, clinical trials, gene expression analysis, sequence analysis, microarrays, and laboratory information management systems highly desirable
· Familiarity with the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG) initiative highly desirable
· Knowledge of and experience working with relational databases
· Experience with technologies such as J2EE (Servlets, JSP), UML modeling tools (ArgoUML, Enterprise Architect), Ant scripts, XMI, XML, Visual Basic, JavaScript, Web Services, SOAP, Perl, and SQL
· Pragmatic problem solver with superior interpersonal skills, cooperative and professional demeanor, and enthusiastic customer service orientation
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
