Business Unit Brand Director - Cell Biology
My client is an international biological resource center supporting global scientific research by maintaining, acquiring and characterizing a comprehensive range of microbes. While my client is a non-profit, this organization also has an emerging Bio-tech-like nature due to their development of ancillary products. These products are a result of Product Development, Translational Research, Informatics and Technical Platform initiatives. Its extensive collections and products have been used throughout the academic, industrial, and governmental research sectors.
Position Description:
This position is responsible for the marketing and product management of a defined product portfolio, and the coordination of activities relating to product availability, forecasting and tactical planning & implementation to achieve defined goals and objectives. The Business Unit Brand Director will establish and maintain current and long-range marketing plans for the brand. This position will manage a marketing team that collaborates with colleagues from every department in the company to lead brand strategy, growth and profitability. The Business Unit Brand Director has responsibility for ownership of the brand P&L and as such its performance will be dependant upon the performance of the P&L. The performance of the P&L plan will be directly measured against the evolution of profit, revenue, market share, brand awareness and image. This individual will support, comply with and enforce all corporate and program policies and procedures
1. Accomplishes corporate and business unit objectives through the activities of two teams- a Marketing Team composed of direct reports in product and marketing management and a Business Team composed of members of functional departments.
2. Monitors intelligence relating to customers, the market, and competitors including technology trends, funding, emerging and unfulfilled customers' needs, applicable regulatory changes, etc. Measures market dimensions, i.e., size, share, etc.
3. Performs routine analysis of the business unit, interprets results, and identifies trends, opportunities and threats. Works to maximize return on investment against corporate and brand objectives. Pursues new opportunities and takes corrective and preventative action as needed.
4. Establishes and maintains current and long-range marketing plans for the brand unit. Oversees the implementation of tactical plans to meet objectives. Ensures that marketing direction is clear and required activities are accomplished.
5. Ensures a robust product portfolio by routinely assessing the breadth and depth of the offering, packaging, value and price, profits, etc. Plans for new product development and product discontinuations as identified. Includes research and evaluation of new product opportunities.
6. Manages all aspects of marketing programs for the business unit. Provides for the design, development, and execution of marketing strategies and oversees advertising and promotional activities related to the business unit.
7. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decisions to include selection, training, performance evaluations, counseling, promotions and terminations.
8. Introduces new products including campaign development utilizing all aspects of the advertising and promotional mix.
9. Provides for the effective communication with other departments to introduce, manage or delete products.
10. Communicates regularly with Customer Service, Technical Service, Sales, Marketing Communications, Development and Collection Scientists, Production, Distribution, IT, Finance and vendors to ensure that the marketing direction is clear and required activities are accomplished.
11. Provides recommendations to senior management for long-range corporate strategic plans including new business opportunities.
12. Develops annual revenue forecasts for assigned markets and provides recommendations for expense, capital, and headcount budgets. Manages revenues and expenses to plan throughout the budget year.
13. Position to be located in the Baltimore, MD / Washington, DC area.
Qualifications:
1. B.S. degree in a life science. An advanced science degree or an MBA is desirable.
2. A minimum of eight years of sales, marketing, and/or brand or product management experience in life sciences or a related field is required; more is desirable.
3. Experience in competitive analysis, market research and analysis, market planning, new product development, marketing communications, sales or sales management, e-business is desirable.
4. Demonstrated experience in managing people and organizational and matrix management skills, including leading cross-functional teams and internal change management processes is desirable. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
Compensation and Benefits:
1. Compensation should be between $120,000-$132,500, which is inclusive of bonus and depending on experience and qualifications.
