Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. develops and markets advanced medical devices for minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. The company focuses on procedure-enabling devices for the interventional diagnosis and treatment of conditions in general and bariatric surgery, as well as gastrointestinal health, gynecology and surgical oncology. The Preclinical Affairs Director is responsible for the Preclinical Research, Vivarium and Clinical Education Departments. The Director will be in a highly visible leadership role responsible for supervising and developing a diverse staff of 50+ individuals.The successful candidate will interact with all levels of management across all disciplines and establish and maintain appropriate contacts in the research, surgical and regulatory community. The Director will manage the day-to-day activities and strategic planning of all preclinical acitivities including strategic scientific and technical study design to meet business and regulatory requirements for innovative new product design. Additional responsibilities will include the design, development and execution of educational laboratory experience for global salesforce and physician training on all EES products and procedures as well as J&J MD& D colleagues; management of a high caliber animal research environment; and management of research, staff and facility to meet all regulatory body requirements including those of the FDA, USDA, and AAALAC. The successful candidate will organize a department that works closely with other departments in the Division, has an actively engaged workforce, takes a leadership role in collaborating with internal and external partners, develops a global working relationship and actively supports the business by conducting and publishing the results of high quality preclinical studies. The Director will set standards for safe behavior. The candidate will lead an environment that fosters collaboration, trust, scientific excellence, creativity, & proactive business partnerships. The Director will identify and implement vision and long term planning strategies, assuring scientific and preclinical viability of strategic business initiatives and ongoing submission compliance of existing products. This position requires an advanced degree in an engineering or scientific discipline. A DVM, MD or related medical degree is desirable. A minimum of 5 years experience with preclinical research issues and an understanding of applicable regulatory compliance issues (LP, AAALAC, USDA) is required. This position requires 10 years or more in a regulated healthcare environment or industry. A minimum of 2 years of experience managing a large, diverse organization with demonstrated success, including managing managers and a highly skilled scientific and technical staff, is required. Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate with cross-functional teams is required. A minimum of 3 years experience and knowledge of research study design and technical data interpretation and communication is required. Organizational effectiveness design and planning, strategic planning and change management experience are essential. Strong influencing skills are necessary. Up to 20% travel (domestic and international) is required.
