Director, Research and Development - (Job Number: 0709669) DescriptionOrtho-Clinical Diagnostics, Inc., a member of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies, is currently recruiting for a Director of Research and Development, based in Rochester, NY. Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, Inc. provides in vitro diagnostic products to hospital, commercial and clinical laboratories, and blood donor centers. Its products include reagents and instrument systems used in blood typing and donor testing; clinical chemistry determinations and immunoassays for disease diagnosis and therapy management; as well as RhoGAM, an injectable drug used to prevent hemolytic disease of the newborn. The Director, R&D will lead and develop a team that defines, designs, and delivers new medically relevant diagnostic products to the marketplace. The incumbent will manage a group of approximately 20 employees and contract staff including Bachelor level medical technologists and Ph.D. level scientists. The incumbent will work closely with business development, technology assessment, and others to define a diagnostic product pipeline that provides significant medical value in one of the following areas: metabolic disease, oncology, or cardiology. The imcumbent will work closely with R&D and functional partners to design and delivery said products. The incumbent will provide expertise and leadership critical to these efforts. The incumbent will ensure timeline, quality, and budget targets are met and will deliver R&D productivity objectives/goals. The incumbent will be a strong manager of people and projects and will drive results through inspired leadership and accountability with a focused and disciplined approach to product development consistent with best practices in the company and the industry. The incumbent will ensure consistency that best practices are developed and leveraged. The incumbent will proactively develop strong relationship with functional partners within OCD and across J&J. An MD, MD/PhD, or PhD with in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline is preferred with a minimum of 7 years of related work experience. A candidate with a Master's Degree and extensive related experience will also be considered. The ideal candidate will be a recognized leader in R&D and possess technical expertise in one or more of the following disease states: metabolic disease, oncology, or cardiology. The candidate will preferrably have a proven track record of enabling new product development leading to products marketed in the US and internationally. Experience in the definition or execution of clinical trials supporting product development or launch is a plus. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in the latest molecular methodologies. The candidate will be market-focused, anticipating changes in needs and potential problems. The incumbent must be able to evaluate the potential of new technologies and their value to the marketplace. The incumbent must have proven organizational leadership ability, demonstrated resourcefulness, strategic and analytical thinking, and be oriented toward achieving objectives. The successful candidate will preferrably be knowledgable about the highly regulated nature of this business. The candidate will be comfortable functioning within a complex environment. The incumbent will have well-developed collaboration skills, and preferably experience in strategic partner development and management. There is up to 25% travel both domestically and internationally required.
