Manager, Process Engineering

SUMMARY

 

The Process Engineering Manager (PEM) shall develop and manage the Process Engineering Group and be assigned specific projects by the Director of Engineering (DOE). It shall be the responsibility of the Process Engineering Manager to manage all aspects of the Process Engineering Group.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Promote safety in all aspects of engineering, equipment and process design, team member training and plant operation and maintenance.

2. Integration, development and mentoring of the Process Engineering Group including Lead Engineer, Engineers, Associate Engineers, Technicians and Drafters.

3. Assess and forecast group resources necessary to be responsive to POET business financial objectives. 

4. Make strategic recommendations and requests to the DOE in a timely manner to achieve desired project and business results.

5. Effectively manage and organize the Process Engineering Group to validate and review engineering calculations and drawings; expect effective and timely communication when changes are required. 

6. Develop engineering and construction schedules and budgetary goals for the Group.

7. Meet or exceed engineering protocols and timelines for drawing review, equipment design, drafting obligations and drawing disbursement.

8. Develop engineering ‘best practice’ processes, targets and written standards to achieve group goals.

9. Lead meetings and present group information to inform and educate POET Engineering, Project Management and Management colleagues on any topic that is deemed necessary.

10.  Build and maintain good relationships with POET’s Partners and Affiliates.

11.  Measure performance of the Process Engineering Group through customer surveys and project related reporting.

12.  Provide regular feedback to team members including annual performance appraisals.

13.  The Process Engineering Group shall be responsible for all aspects of the ethanol process design; including mass and energy balances, sizing and design of process equipment, procurement and contracting for equipment and labor when required and the continual search for new and better technology within the area of ethanol production.  These designs shall be represented and communicated by specific drawings, technical specification sheets and the Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s). 

14.  Process Engineering Group will design and keep up to date drawings representing the equipment, input and outputs and mass and energy requirements of each ethanol facility.

15.  Process Engineering Group will design and integrate consistent equipment, design and strategies for each ethanol facility.

16.  PEM will lead the design ensuring proper engineering and design codes are adhered to ensure safety and efficiency.

17.  PEM will require that all process equipment and labor to be competitively bid; the correct equipment and/or labor will be selected.

18.  PEM will work with the POET affiliates to trial new and innovative processes and process equipment to continually promote safety and efficiency.

19.  PEM will work with colleagues, outside engineering and suppliers to continue to enhance the process and process equipment to continually promote safety and efficiency.

20.  PEM will work with POET and Premier Partner plants to troubleshoot the process and process equipment. 

21.  The exchange of information is vital to improve continuous operation at the existing facility and the process design for new plants.

22.  PEM shall provide input into initial engineering and construction schedules with PM’s and other lead engineers.

23.  PEM will communicate significant process and project challenges and any supplier’s concerns, together with recommended solutions, to the DOE and Peers.

24.  PEM will direct the Process Engineering Group to find ways to improve profitability.

25.  PEM shall attend project meetings, or assign designee’s, on behalf of the Process Engineering Group. 

26.  PEM shall lead the Process Engineering Group in commissioning new plant equipment.  The commissioning will consist of training new team members, testing equipment and the coordination of D&C team members and contractors for different and specific startup activities related to process equipment and the ethanol process in general.

27.  PEM will contribute to Project Post Mortem analysis of plant design and operation facilitated by the Project Manager.  The findings from this analysis will be considered for future designs and as potential projects for existing Premier Partner plants.

28.  PEM will resolve problems and respond to requests from POET and other business partners within 5 calendar days.

29.  Establish and promote “partnering” objectives among POET personnel, subcontractors, suppliers, engineers and architects.  PEM shall promote establishing multiple strategic partners for key areas of equipment, labor, and technology and process improvement.

30.  PEM shall contribute to project punch lists for each project. 

31.  Monitor and approve project expenditures per authority limits.

32.  PEM shall approve letters to suppliers when non-performance occurs.  Monitor detailed recovery plan when equipment is behind schedule.

33.  Maintain a team environment with other plant departments.

34.  Champion POET in the community.

35.  Maintain a high level of customer service and friendly atmosphere.

36.  Others duties or special projects as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS/COMPETENCIES

 

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position along with effective oral and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.

 

4-year Chemical Engineering Degree, or equivalent, required.

 

Minimum of ten (10) years experience with some managing a group of engineering professionals.

Extensive knowledge and experience in process design and the development of mass and energy balances within process systems.

 

Active Professional Engineering registration is strongly preferred, but is not required.

 

Excellent diplomatic, verbal & written communication and PC skills required.  Ability to organize and manage multiple objectives and large professional department required. Successful candidate must be able to work with customers, peers, company officers and board members.



WORK ENVIRONMENT

Overnight travel to Project Sites, Vendors and Subcontracts as needed to successfully execute the Position.
