The candidate will lead a research program to develop new treatment strategies for preventing thrombosis and improving biocompatibility of intravascular devices. The individual will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, a high level of motivation and the ability to work independently. The position requires strong knowledge of thrombosis and vascular disease mechanisms as well as experience in designing, executing and interpreting studies in animal models. Experience with new product development is highly desirable. The individual may have direct reports and must be capable of leading a Team focused on development of new cardiovascular products. The candidate will report to the head of Therapeutics Research in the R&D organization. Essential duties and responsibilities include to lead and develop new programs in the area of thrombosis and vascular disease for new intravascular devices; design protocols and execute experiments in animal models, primarily through contract research organizations; write research reports, summarize and communicate information to peers and upper management; communicate with thought leaders and companies providing new technologies; attend and participate in relevant scientific meetings and conferences; develop project timelines and resource requirements; manage budget and spending for program; evaluate new technology and advise management on potential opportunities; maintain surveillance of new therapeutics, medical devices and competitive threats. Primary work environment will be an office setting. Research will be executed primarily at external CROs under the guidance of the candidate. Hands-on research will also be encouraged at laboratories and vivariums across J&J. This position requires a PhD or MD in biological science, medical science, or bioengineering with postdoctoral training and 4 or more years of additional experience in the field of cardiovascular research. Pharmaceutical/medical device industry experience and product development experience are preferred. Experience with local drug delivery technologies and medical devices an asset. Candidate will have strong scientific credentials in the area of thrombosis and vascular disease mechanisms based on a record of publications and patents. Candidate must have knowledge of cardiovascular physiology, pharmacology and pathology and a demonstrated ability to organize and lead novel programs. Candidate must have strong written and verbal communication skills. Preference for individuals who have worked in pharmaceutical or medical device organizations. Ability to work with cross-functional teams and demonstrated leadership skills an asset. Must be willing to travel (primarily domestic).
