Position Overview

 

The Manager, Chemistry assumes a wide range of business related and technical duties associated with the supervision, conduct and reporting of various chemistry projects performed at Springborn Smithers Laboratories.  Recruit, retain and supervision of the professional and technical staff, including reviews, promotions, and accounting of time worked.  The Manager of Chemistry is expected to enhance the performance of the analytical team and its individuals by developing and instituting novel approaches to analytical and product chemistry (physical chemistry), problem-solving and in the development and maintenance of customer relations leading to new business opportunities.  The manager will effectively communicate and collaborate with peers regarding study conduct and new technologies.  Duties include training technicians, reviews, promotions, management of routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrument calibration, project tracking, technical and business communications with peers and customers.

 

A. Job Duties

 

            Essential Functions:

 

1.      Supervision of professional and technical staff, which would include

 scheduling of instrumentation and/or technical staff.

2.      Develop novel approaches to research projects.

3.      Take initiative to problem solving for quick resolution of study programs.

4.      Review business metrics regarding the financial performance of the analytical services.

5.      Communicate analytical results and programs effectively with peers and customers.

6.      Provide technical guidance to professional staff.

 

Exceptional technical writing skills [written and oral comprehension, written and oral expression]. Exceptional ability to integrate observations [visual and written discrimination] into evaluation process. Exceptional problem solving skills [mathematical reasoning]. Ability to work at a fast pace, prioritize work assignments for assigned staff and handle stress [high productivity]. Comfortable working with standard computer software [word processing, spreadsheets, data bases, statistical software].

 

B. Chemical Safety

 

1.    Assists in chemical use, chemical labeling, and chemical storage.

 

C. Laboratory Safety

 

1.  Knowledgeable and conforms to all relevant safety information, within area of responsibility, including use of  

     specialized safety equipment such as respirators.

 

 

Job Specifications

 

M.S. in Chemistry and 4-6 years applied job experience or training gained obtaining a Ph.D. appropriate to analytical chemistry and business management is required.

 

Proficient in documentation and procedures required by Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations and SSL Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

 

Proficiency with  EZChrom and Chem Station platforms is a plus.
