Molecular Laboratory Technician

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation is seeking a Molecular Laboratory Technician to support the DoD Global Influenza Surveillance Program at the Air Force Institute for Operational Health at Brooks City-Base in San Antonio, TX .Responsibilities are to perform laboratory procedures in virology.  Assist with testing in various areas to include molecular epidemiology, and microbiology techniques.  Process specimens using the appropriate equipment, instruments or techniques to assure optimum patient specimen integrity and positive identification throughout the test process.  Perform quality control procedures and equipment preventive maintenance to assure all test performance, test methodologies, and equipment perform within the manufacturer's guidelines and performance specifications.  Use considerable judgment to define and resolve problems and make recommendations.  Maintains accurate records; tabulates and organizes data. Use computer for data analysis. Instruct new laboratory members on testing protocols. Perform other duties as assigned. Participate in the College of American Pathologists (CAP) proficiency-testing program or other external proficiency-testing.  Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines; knowledge of and skill in tissue culture technique and handling biological hazards and their safe use and disposal.  Comply with the safety guidelines for work practices and use of protective equipment outlined in the laboratory's Fire and Ground Safety Manual, the Chemical Hygiene Plan, and the Biological Exposure Control Plan.  Required to be fit tested for N95 Mask. 

Minimum Education/Training:  As a minimum, laboratory technicians must have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution. 

Minimum Experience:  The laboratory technicians will perform high complexity testing and must meet personnel standards according to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act, 1988 (CLIA-88) as outlined in 493.1489.  In addition, if the technician could have previously qualified as a technician under CLIA-88 in 493.1491 or meets the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (DOD-CLIP) requirements.
