SUMMARY
Under minimal direction, the candidate is responsible for complex laboratory procedures. This position requires general knowledge of molecular biology techniques, laboratory processes, specialized medical diagnostic laboratory tests, blood test procedures, and medical terminology in order to perform specialized medical laboratory diagnostic tests.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned.
· Departmental support of various procedures adopted by the department.
· Ensures that procedures are strictly followed at all times and assists in updates and revisions.
· Ability to perform routine molecular test procedures, such as:
- Specimen processing
- Nucleic acid extraction
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
- Real-time PCR
- Capillary electrophoresis
- FISH processing and analysis
· Ability to operate equipment listed below with sufficient proficiency to successfully execute test procedures and to train others;
- Fluorescent microscope
- Spectrophotometer
- Capillary electrophoresis equipment
- Centrifuges
- Thermal cycler
· Supervises and monitors laboratory testing performance of Molecular Technicians.
· Prepares validation documentation of new tests and procedures, as required.
· Assists in document control and reporting quality statistics.
· Performs job functions under CAP and CLIA guidelines.
· Obtains and maintains standards and reference materials for ongoing testing.
· Performs method qualifications per approved procedures, as required.
· Maintains laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as performs or schedules equipment and instrument maintenance / calibration / certifications, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
To qualify, candidates must possess 5 years experience in FISH with experience in reading and processing HER2 FISH on paraffin, Heme probes on bone marrow and UroVysion. Must possess strong working knowledge in the MS Office suite specifically: Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. All candidates must pass a color vision test for duties requiring FISH analysis. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES
Successful candidate must have a solid understanding of molecular laboratory techniques. Must also demonstrate initiative, balanced assertiveness and team orientation as well as possess effective writing & communication and good computer skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
B.S. degree, or equivalent, in physical or life sciences required with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the clinical diagnostics, biological research and development, medical device, or pharmaceutical industry. Must be a NCA licensed CLSp (MB) and have a California license as Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist, or have a California license as Clinical Laboratory Scientist, or have a California license as Clinical Cytogeneticist Scientist.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSMust be able to perform standard clerical functions; filing, data entry, etc. which may require time behind the computer.
